7 Products That Make Dorm Life Easier

Inside: Are you looking for dorm room ideas? Not only is decorating necessary so you create a space you love, but there are a few products to consider buying that make dorm life a bit easier.

Are you looking for dorm room ideas? Not only is decorating necessary so you create a space you love, but there are a few products to consider buying that make dorm life a bit easier. If you’re an incoming college student, I’m sure you’ve spent a decent chunk of time researching what you need for your dorm. Or if you’re a parent of a college student, you’ve probably done the same.

Appliances, furniture, décor, the works. Preparing is a lot of fun, but unfortunately, the researching doesn’t give you a full idea of what you need. There are some things you don’t realize you need until you’ve been in your dorm for a while, or things you just didn’t think about.

So here they are:

Dorm Room Ideas: 7 Products That Make Dorm Life Easier

1) Laundry Pods

Are you looking for dorm room ideas? Not only is decorating necessary so you create a space you love, but there are a few products to consider buying that make dorm life a bit easier.Lots of dorms have laundry facilities in them, and if they don’t, there’s one on campus or a laundromat nearby. The pods are a lot easier than trying to figure out where to pour the detergent in or just flat out making a mess. Do yourself a favor and just grab a bag of detergent pods instead. You can just throw the pod in with your clothes and not worry about messy liquid detergent.

2) Brita Pitcher

Are you looking for dorm room ideas? Not only is decorating necessary so you create a space you love, but there are a few products to consider buying that make dorm life a bit easier.Plastic water bottles from the vending machine can get expensive (and also they’re bad for the environment. Boo.) Having a water pitcher is an environment-safe alternative that saves you from racking up plastic bottles.

Just fill up the pitcher every night and stick it in the fridge so you have nice cold water every morning. One of my favorite Brita pitchers is their Stream one. It filters as your pour, so you don’t have to wait for filtered water. Instant gratification. 🙂

I wrote about this awesome pitcher here.

(Bonus tip: drink a TON of water. Your energy level and overall health will benefit, especially during the busy college years.)

3) Bed Risers

Are you looking for dorm room ideas? Not only is decorating necessary so you create a space you love, but there are a few products to consider buying that make dorm life a bit easier. The space under your bed is the perfect place for additional storage, or for a place to relax that’s all your own. Most dorms have beds that loft, but if yours only goes up a little, grab some bed risers. There’s even a set from Studio 3B on Amazon with additional outlets in them.

4) Over-the-Door Hanger

Are you looking for dorm room ideas? Not only is decorating necessary so you create a space you love, but there are a few products to consider buying that make dorm life a bit easier.Closet space in dorms is quite limited, so pick up an over-the-door hanger for your heavier jackets, purse, and backpack so you can save closet space for all those cute clothes you bought for your first year of college. The hangers should fit on most doors.

5) Drawer Dividers

Are you looking for dorm room ideas? Not only is decorating necessary so you create a space you love, but there are a few products to consider buying that make dorm life a bit easier.

Several dorms have dressers, which is handy, but those can get to be a huge mess if they aren’t organized properly. Also, folding all of the socks and underwear one by one can be time-consuming. Get some drawer dividers so you have set compartments for all of the things in your dresser. This can save you a lot of time. And lost socks.

6) Plants

Are you looking for dorm room ideas? Not only is decorating necessary so you create a space you love, but there are a few products to consider buying that make dorm life a bit easier.Yes, that’s right. Plants. Living in a dorm can get gloomy sometimes, so brighten up your space, and give yourself a new hobby, by growing some perennial plants. The green will make your space feel a bit more natural and bright, and give you something to look forward to every day.

Some good perennial flowers include: zinnias, marigolds, and forget-me-nots. You could also opt for succulents which are incredibly easy to care for.

7) Noise Cancelling Headphones

Are you looking for dorm room ideas? Not only is decorating necessary so you create a space you love, but there are a few products to consider buying that make dorm life a bit easier. The chances of being able to study in a dorm are slim to none, especially when you’ve got people banging on doors, running up and down the hallways, and loud phone conversations. Trust me when I say you NEED noise cancelling headphones.

Whether you’re in the safety of the library, or the possible chaos of your dorm, these bad boys will make studying, and possibly sleeping, much easier.

I hope all of these things are helpful and will make your dorm a happy place!

Incorporating Tassel Jewelry Into Your Fall Wardrobe

Do you love tassel jewelry as much as I do? Here's how to incorporate it into your wardrobe this fall.

If you’ve been following me on Instagram, then you know I’m currently in the Pacific Northwest. Washington state to be exact. About eleven weeks ago, my family and I began our year-long trip around the U.S. and Canada. We started off in Texas and have visited Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, two provinces in Canada, Washington, and Oregon.

When packing for this trip, I knew I needed to bring clothing and shoes for all four seasons. Choosing what to bring, what to store and what to get rid of was definitely overwhelming. But as wake up each morning to get dressed, I realize how much I am loving having a smaller wardrobe.

I know some of you are wanting me to go more in-depth on what I brought with me and I’ll get on that soon. Promise!

I remember back in May when I was going through my wardrobe thinking ‘Oh my gosh…what about jewelry?!’

Would I have room for it?

Would I want to wear it?

What stays and what goes?

I ended up selling some, giving some away and storing pieces that had sentimental value. What did I bring with me? Whatever could fit in a small cloth jewelry organizer I purchased.

Also, if it had a tassel, it was coming on this trip with me. You see, I love tassel jewelry. I like how it can add a bohemian look to an outfit. How it can add a pop of color and interest to an outfit that might just feel kind of, well, meh. And how it can easily transition from summer to fall.

Tassel Jewelry from 7 Charming Sisters

Do you love tassel jewelry as much as I do? Here's how to incorporate it into your wardrobe this fall.Today I’m featuring three different pieces of tassel jewelry from 7 Charming Sisters. I’ve worked with the brand before and they have quickly scooted to the top of my list of favorite places to buy jewelry. They have a little something for everyone because the company is literally made up of seven women from all different walks of life.

The call themselves ”work sisters” and have been colleagues for 10 to 15 years. Hence the name…7 Charming Sisters.

Here’s a little more about the “sisters”:

The sisters are: Paula, the elegant Executive, Kim, the vivacious Life of the Party, Jennifer, the dedicated Fashionista, Donalda, the flirtatious Social Butterfly, Jessica, the smart and Sexy Nerd,  Kimberly, the cute All-American Girl and Melissa, the sporty Super Mom; 7 Charming Sisters has a deep commitment to helping those with disabilities find jobs and employs disabled people in their studio. Many of their handmade pieces are handcrafted by those with intellectual disabilities who earn commission.

Alright, here’s how I incorporated tassel jewelry into my simple, yet functional, fall wardrobe.

Incorporating Tassel Jewelry Into Your Fall Wardrobe

Outfit #1 – Blue Tabbed Sleeve Shirt | Denim | Fringe Sandals | Tassel Earrings

Aren’t these earrings gorgeous?! They’re the Air Like Cider earrings and are perfect for the woman who embraces the bohemian style. They add a touch of glam with the gold links and a pop of color with the beading and tassel.

I paired the earrings with my favorite navy blue tabbed sleeve shirt. The colors compliment each other so well.

I have a few tabbed sleeve shirts that I wear often in early fall. I wear the sleeves up when it’s warmer and roll them down when it starts getting cool.

I also wear my fringe sandals in early fall. They go with jeans, shorts, and dresses and have become my favorite go to pair.

Outfit #2 – Olive dress | Tassel Bracelet Set

This olive dress is the perfect versatile dress for fall. I added it to my wardrobe last fall and have worn it with a cardigan or just a scarf for added warmth. I can switch out my shoes for sandals or ankle boots. It’s also incredibly comfortable!

The bracelet I’m wearing is the Clean Energy Bracelet Set. The bracelets are separate and very light weight. They feature the prettiest rose tassel and beads with warm colors. This is one of those pieces of jewelry you can wear year-round.

Outfit #3 – White Shirt | Denim | Utility Jacket | Sneakers | Tassel Necklace

Dressing for fall is all about layering and this olive utility jacket has been with me for years. I really enjoy layering it over a simple white tee. Add your favorite denim and sneakers or ankle boots and voila! – a casual and stylish fall outfit.

To kick it up a notch, I added the Thornless Rose Necklace. It features a tassel, white quartz, and other charms for a fun look. I wore this necklace alone with a casual outfit, but it would go just as great with something a little more dressed up. Like your favorite Little Black Dress. You can also add shorter gold pieces for a pretty layered look.

Are you ready for fall fashion? I’ve already broken out some of my fall pieces because this Texas girl is freezing up north!

The Erin Condren Planner: Why It Works For College Kids

Inside: Read more about the best planners for college students: the Erin Condren edition, and see why it might work for you.

*This is a guest post written by Hannah of Hello, It’s Hannah. An article for college kids, written by a college kid. 🙂

Read more about the best planners for college students: the Erin Condren edition and see why it might work for you.For my entire life, I’ve been a detail oriented, planning machine. I do not function without a real, paper planner, ever. I once tried the whole putting-events-in-my-phone thing, and I was just a mess. I have to write stuff down, or I don’t remember it.

And in the past year, after searching for the proper planner, I was introduced to Erin Condren, a website with everything from planners and notebooks to art prints and home décor to pajamas. Yes, they even have pajamas.

After using an Erin Condren planner for a year (my first year of college), I can say that they are perfect for the busy college kid, and I will be getting another one for my sophomore year. Let me tell you why.

Planners for College Students: The Erin Condren Edition

Read more about the best planners for college students: the Erin Condren edition and see why it might work for you.

1) The Variety

These planners come in several designs and patterns. They all have customizable color schemes and you can even put your own quote on some of them.

On top of that, they actually have six different types of planners. There’s the Life Planner, which I ordered last year, the Hardbound Life Planner, the Deluxe Monthly Planner (the one I ordered this year), the Teacher Lesson Planner, The Academic Planner, and even a Wedding Planner!

Read more about the best planners for college students: the Erin Condren edition and see why it might work for you.

With the amount of variety, your college student can choose whatever works best for them, whether it’s a bright, flashy, year long Life Planner or a simple, six-month Academic planner. There’s also a large variety of prices to fit your budget.

You can browse through all of their amazing designs here.

2) The Organization

Each planner has monthly overviews, so planning in advance is easy. Also, the Academic and Life Planners have weekly overviews and spaces to write down homework assignments and deadlines, for the more detailed oriented student (aka, me).

Going a step further, the Academic Planner also has weekly overviews, but they include spaces to write down specific classes, assignments, and due dates. Planning, and remembering when to turn in assignments, has never been easier.

3) The Personalization

College can be (okay, is) stressful, but something that made it just a little bit less stressful for me was knowing I had a cute, functional planner that I could customize to my organizational needs. Instead of trying to fit myself to fit the planner, I could fit the planner for myself.

Read more about the best planners for college students: the Erin Condren edition and see why it might work for you.

Being able to customize your planner is one of my favorite things about Erin Condren. You can put your name on the front, change the color scheme, change the color of the coil, and there’s even an option to get a collage cover so you can customize your planner with all of your favorite pictures.

Customizing my planner made college just a little more fun and less stressful.

Do you have an Erin Condren planner or another one that helped curb the college chaos? I hope you find the planner of your dreams and one that fits your personality to a tee.

Where to Find Stylish & Affordable Eyeglasses Your Kids (And You!) Will Love

Thank you JCPenney Optical for sponsoring this post. Visit your local JCPenney Optical to find your perfect frames!

Are you on the hunt for stylish and affordable eyeglasses for kids (and for you!) that they'll love? Look no further! I have all the deets on where to find the hottest brands for an affordable price.I’ll never forget the day we found out my youngest needed glasses. I felt like the worst parent ever because he had *kind of* mentioned a time or two that he couldn’t see very well. When I say kind of, I mean I was most likely busy doing something else and my mind wasn’t laser focused on what he was saying.

I was *kind of* listening.

Basically, he needed glasses and a much needed (and much overdue) eye appointment proved it. I won’t even get into the story of how we found out he is oh so color-blind. It all started in a parking lot when he was frustrated that we weren’t seeing the red car he was talking about. (It was green.) Oh wait, I said I wasn’t going to go there.

Are you on the hunt for stylish and affordable eyeglasses for kids (and for you!) that they'll love? Look no further! I have all the deets on where to find the hottest brands for an affordable price.

We’re now going on about four years of him wearing glasses. And in those four years, he’s needed more than four pairs of glasses. Why? Because he’s a very active boy who can sometimes break things. Things like bikes and skateboards and phones and yes, eyeglasses.

The saga with his latest pair has resulted in him wearing broken glasses for several weeks. He broke them falling out of a hammock tied quite high in a tree. True story.

Can you relate?

Do you have an active child who wears glasses and is prone to breaking things?

Do we need to start a ‘moms whose kids break things’ support group? I’ll head it up.

Needless to say, we’ve learned over the years that expensive + glasses for our now 13-year-old do not go well together. We need and want affordable. He needs and wants stylish. Needs stylish? Yes, because…#image.

But really, in all seriousness, his eyeglasses are something he wears every.single.day. No breaks. No days off. They’re essential and I don’t blame him for wanting to feel like he looks good in them.

I’ve also started wearing glasses for reading and working, and I won’t even tell you how long it took me to pick them out. 😉

So, where does one find these stylish, affordable eyeglasses I’m talking about?

You can shop JCPenney Optical and find eyeglasses for as low as $39.99. This back to school sale includes a large selection of frames with impact-resistant lenses, and an eyewear protection plan.

They have brands like Ray Ban, Puma, OP and Converse for kids.

I’m wearing a pair of Cover Girl glasses from JCPenney Optical and I love them!

Have your kids gone back to school yet? We’re down to only one in school because the rest have graduated. How did my husband get THAT old? Crazy right? 😉

Time Saving Mom Hacks for the Busy Back to School Season + Family Circle

Inside: ‘Tis the season of busy! Here are a few back to school time-saving mom hacks to help with those crazy mornings.

'Tis the season of busy! Here are a few back to school time-saving mom hacks to help with those crazy mornings.I’m sure you’ve seen this statement everywhere on social media and your favorite blogs, but….can you BELIEVE it’s back to school season already? It’s crazy! I have friends whose kids went back this week and some who don’t start until after Labor Day.

I have one kiddo in college, one who graduated and is taking a gap year while we travel the U.S. and Canada full-time for the next year and we’re homeschooling our 13-year-old. Needless to say, this is the most different back to school season we’ve ever experienced, but I’m excited about it. And although we’re living in an RV and our destination is always changing, we’ll definitely have a morning routine once it’s time for a schedule again. We still have to work and our 13-year-old still needs to do school.

Are you looking for more back to school tips? Here are some related posts on Mom Fabulous you might enjoy:

One thing I’ve always been good at is a routine. Things like creating a lunch packing station, having quick breakfast options on-hand and knowing who’s responsible for what in the mornings have all contributed to a smooth out the door routine.

Time Saving Mom Hacks for the Busy Back to School Season + Family Circle

I teamed up with Family Circle and Carnation Breakfast Essentials to share some time-saving mom hacks for the back to school season for their September issue. It’s on newsstands now, so be sure to pick up a copy! It’s chock full of tips on getting organized, fall fashion and all things Back to School.

'Tis the season of busy! Here are a few back to school time-saving mom hacks to help with those crazy mornings.

Here’s a peek at what I shared:

When the school year begins, getting back into the swing of things can be difficult. Schedules are busier and mornings are hectic, but with the following time-saving hacks, busy moms can get it all done during the back-to-school season.

  • Plan outfits the night before to make getting dressed quicker and easier.
  • Breakfast is important! Start the day off right with Carnation Breakfast Essentials® Powder Drink Mix, a convenient way to get the nutrition your body needs.
  • Create a lunch making station to streamline the preparation process.
  • Set a timer for morning dawdlers and make it a game of Beat the Clock!

Plan outfits the night before

'Tis the season of busy! Here are a few back to school mom hacks to help with those crazy mornings. This goes for mom and little ones.

When I worked outside the home, the simple task of laying out my outfit for the next day, saved me so much time and stress. I made sure I knew what the weather would be like and what activities were happening during the day so I could dress accordingly. I also always (always!) carried a cardigan with me because offices can get so cold.

For the little ones, having an outfit laid out for them can also save a lot of time and stress. Of course, if you have a strong-willed child like I did, they’ll most likely snub their nose at that lovely outfit and choose something entirely different. In my early years of parenting, this frustrated the heck out of me! But I slowly learned to just let it be. I mean, who really needs to match in Kindergarten, right?

Breakfast Is Important!

All three of my kids are completely different when it comes to what they want for breakfast. While one doesn’t mind cooking and whipping up scrambled eggs, the others want something that’s grab and go.

My daughter loves Carnation Breakfast Essentials and that was her go-to breakfast in high school. And since she’s been on the road with us this summer, it’s been her go-to again.

As soon as our kids were old enough to pour a bowl of cereal, they were old enough to get their own breakfast. That definitely helped save time in the mornings and it also made sure I didn’t skip breakfast because I wasn’t focused on breakfast for everyone else.

Create a Lunch Making Station

'Tis the season of busy! Here are a few back to school mom hacks to help with those crazy mornings.I’m a sucker for organized systems. Without them, I’m fairly certain I would lose my mind.

A long time ago, I noticed that when I was making lunches, I was going back and forth all over the kitchen, plus searching high and low in the refrigerator and pantry for items to pack. And then it hit me! Why not create a lunch making station? So I did and every new house we’ve moved into got its own station.

You can read more in depth tips here or reference my Back to School Pinterest Board which is full of great ideas from all over the web.

Set a Timer for Morning Dawdlers

'Tis the season of busy! Here are a few back to school mom hacks to help with those crazy mornings.

There’s always that one kid who takes a little longer to get going and get ready than the rest of us. Speaking from experience, that little preschool morning dawdler turns into a giant high school morning dawdler. They don’t change! It’s just the way they are.

For the little ones, setting a timer and turning it into a game of sorts might help. Whenever they beat the clock, you could give them a sticker on a chart. And after so many stickers, there’s a prize at the end.

For the older ones, you just have to make sure they get up earlier than the rest. And when they’re old enough to drive themselves, well it’s their responsibility to get out the door on time. Yay adulting!

Do you have any time-saving hacks for this busy back to school season? If so, I would love to hear them!

How to Make Your Eyes Pop – Simple Makeup Tricks for Busy Moms

Are you wondering how to make your eyes pop? Keep reading for some simple and easy makeup tricks that’ll make them stand out!Are you wondering how to make your eyes pop? Keep reading for some simple and easy makeup tricks that'll make them stand out!

I’m always looking for ways to make my eyes appear a little bigger and to enhance the color. I have small hazel eyes, but with the right makeup techniques, I can make them appear more green and larger. I am no makeup whiz, so you can rest easy that these tips and tricks are doable for anyone, at any skill level.

Some of the products I mention below are part of Kroger’s Beauty event that begins August 9th and runs until August 22nd. When you spend $15 on participating beauty products, you’ll save $5 instantly. I am always up for a good deal and this is the perfect one to stock up for fall.

Be sure to scroll all the way to the bottom of this post for a list of some products to look for in your local Kroger, as well as a link to Kroger’s beauty page for beauty video tutorials.

How to Make Your Eyes Pop

Here are the products I used to define my eyes and make them pop:

  • Black eye liner
  • Cover Girl Easy Breezy Shadow Set
  • Cover Girl Easy Breezy Brow Set
  • Revlon Volume Plus Length Magnified Mascara

I started off with foundation and powder to even out my skin tone. I’ve been using Cover Girl foundation since my teens!

Here’s a before picture.

Step one: With the black eye liner, apply a thin line to top lash line.

You can also tightline your eyes, which means applying eye liner to your upper waterline. It helps your eyelashes appear thicker, your eyes bigger and if done right, can give your eyes a twinkling look to them.

Make sure you get the black eye liner as thin as possible on your top lash line. If it’s too thick, it can make your eyes appear smaller, which is not the look we’re going for here!

Step two: Apply a light base shadow to your entire lid, then a darker color (matte brown or dark rose) into the outer corner of your eye.

Place the darker color just above your natural crease on half of your eye lid and blend. This gives your eye some dimension.

Step three: Define your brows and add shimmer shadow.

Defining my brows is something I’ve been fighting against doing for quite some time. Partly because I’m lazy (ha!) and partly because I’ve seen women who overdo it and it just doesn’t look natural. But I’ve finally realized when done right, it can really enhance your eyes. I’ve also noticed my eye brows are thinning a bit and could use some help. Sigh.

So far, my favorite eyebrow product for those of us who are challenged in the makeup department is Cover Girl Easy Breezy Brow Set. It truly lives up to its name and is easy breezy.

The directions are simple and easy to follow:

  • Using the large end of the brush, apply the darker color (1) to the first half of your eyebrow.
  • Using the smaller end, apply the middle color (2) to the second half of your eyebrow.
  • Using the enclosed eyeshadow applicator, apply shimmer shadow (3) to your brow bone and the inside corner of your eyes.

And done!

Step four: Use mascara that gives your lashes volume and length.

I used Revlon Volume + Length Magnified Mascara. This mascara has a high shine black fiber formula that provides amplified volume and length. It also has the Revlon Magnifying Lash Brush that gives intense volume and length.

And you’re done! Four easy steps to eyes that pop!
