5 Tips to a Brighter Smile for a Big Boost in Confidence

If you find yourself covering your mouth when you laugh or looking at pictures of yourself and cringing, a brighter smile could help give you just the boost of confidence you need.

If you find yourself covering your mouth when you laugh or looking at pictures of yourself and cringing, a brighter smile could help give you just the boost of confidence you need.

I’ll never forget the first time I noticed my teeth weren’t as white as I would like them to be. A friend had uploaded a picture of us on Facebook, tagged me in it and there it was…she had a gorgeous white smile and mine was, well not what I would have liked it to be. That dull yellowish smile made me look older than I was and that, my friends, was frustrating.

So, I starting reading up on ways to get a brighter smile and after using some of the tips I found, I’m happy to say I can now smile with confidence. In fact, people compliment my smile out of the blue all the time. Talk about a great feeling!

If you’re looking for ways to give you a smile you feel great about, these 5 tips will help.

5 Tips for a Brighter Smile

Use a teeth whitening kit that actually works

When it comes to teeth whitening kits, I’ve tried just about all them. From gooey gels that made me gag to ones that made my gums super sensitive, I’ve spent what feels like a small fortune to get whiter teeth.

Teeth Whitening KitWhat I wanted was a kit that a) worked b) didn’t bother my sensitive teeth and gums and c) didn’t cost a ton of money. Thankfully I found a teeth whitening kit that checked off all those boxes, plus it was created by dentists.

Have you heard of the Luster Pro Light Dental Whitening System? It’s what I’m currently using and the results have me doing a little happy dance. Here’s why I like it and why it’s my teeth whitening kit of choice:

  • There are no messy strips or trays
  • It uses the same whitening light technology found in dental offices
  • It has no tooth sensitivity
  • You can get results in as little as 30 minutes
  • It works!

How to get a brighter smile

You can find out more about this teeth whitening kit or purchase one for yourself here. If it’s out of stock on Amazon (there was only one in stock at the time of this writing) check Target or Walmart.

Select the right shade of lipstick

Selecting the right shade of lipstick can go a long way in helping your smile look brighter. There are shades that can actually make your teeth look yellower than they are, which you obviously don’t want. And then there are shades that help enhance your smile, helping to make your teeth appear whiter.

For pink shades, look for ones with a blue undertone and stay away from ones that have a yellow or orange undertone to them. Berry pink is a nice shade to try and can really go a long way in brightening your smile.

If you really want your smile to pop (and look super confident in the process) go with a red lipstick that has a blue undertone and just like the pink shades, stay away from orange undertones.

Stay away from darker shades like purple and browns, which generally emphasize any yellowing of your teeth.

If you’re having troubles choosing the right lipstick shade, you can reference this handy guide I wrote about finding the right lipstick for your skin tone.

Drink from a Straw

It’s a little-known fact that drinks like coffee, tea, and red wine can stain your teeth. If you have no desire to give them up (like myself) one way to avoid it is to drink from a straw.

But, if drinking your glass of red wine with a straw seems like the most ridiculous thing you’ve ever heard, opt for swishing with water immediately after you’re done with your drink. You can also lightly brush your teeth afterward to avoid stains.

Snack on raw fruits and vegetables

Not only is snacking on raw fruits and vegetables good for you and a healthy habit worth developing, it also helps in removing bacteria and mild surface stains from your teeth. In fact, there are even foods that can help whiten your teeth naturally.

If you’re wondering what foods will make your teeth whiter so you can add them to your grocery list, keep reading.

Foods that help whiten your teeth naturally:

  • Strawberries
  • Apples
  • Celery
  • Carrots
  • Radishes

For an extensive article on foods that will whiten your teeth naturally, be sure to read this one from InStyle.

Go the natural route with charcoal

As I wrote in this post about activated charcoal products, they are very popular right now and for good reason. They work. Activated charcoal is great for your skin, helps with dandruff and it whitens your teeth.

I’ve read article after article (and have seen the before and after pictures) of just how effective brushing with activated charcoal is. You have several options when it comes to products, with more coming out on the market every month.

There’s charcoal powder, charcoal toothpaste, and even a charcoal toothbrush.

Are you ready for the days of being embarrassed by your smile to be long gone? I sure was and am so glad I took action for a brighter smile. The next time a friend posts a picture of me on Facebook and tags me, I’ll be okay with it. 🙂

If you find yourself covering your mouth when you laugh or looking at pictures of yourself and cringing, a brighter smile could help give you just the boost of confidence you need.

The Vickie denim short have just the right amount of stretch, are mid rise so they fit perfectly on me and have a little bit of distressing that doesn’t go overboard. I’m wearing a size 6 and they are true to size.

Like I mentioned, denim shorts are very versatile. You can wear them walking along the beach, out running errands, camping or even to a casual outdoor party. I’ve created 6 different shorts outfit ideas, ranging from really casual to a little more dressed up. I hope you enjoy the variety!

5 Easy Ways to Drink More Water

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Brita at Target. All opinions are 100% mine.

Do you drink enough water? This has always been an issue for me, but I’ve decided 2017 is the year I take back my health and start being more proactive about it. Brita Stream with Filter-As-You-Pour Technology One simple thing I can do for myself is to get serious about the amount of water I drink. I struggle with migraines and I’ve noticed one of the triggers is dehydration. On most days I get a migraine, I can track it back to the fact that I’ve already consumed two cups of coffee and zero cups of water. Not good.

Here are some ways I’m making getting my 8 glasses a day, less of a chore and something to look forward to.

5 Easy Ways to Drink More Water

1.Use The Brita Stream Pitcher Brita Stream with Filter-As-You-Pour Technology At the end of February, I started using the new Brita Stream pitcher. In fact, my entire family started using it and it’s now part of our daily routine. It’s great for making that perfect cup of espresso, but it’s also great for helping you drink more water. We keep it in our refrigerator for daily use. Whoever uses up the last bit of water, fills it up again for the next person. Brita Stream with Filter-As-You-Pour Technology It’s amazing how something as simple as keeping a pitcher full of cold water in the refrigerator has helped increase mine (and my family’s) water consumption.

The Brita Stream, which is Available at Target, features Filter-As-You-Pour Technology. What does that mean exactly? It means no more waiting for the water to make its way through the filter. You just fill it and pour instantly, enjoying filtered water in a snap.

Another nice feature I like is its controlled pour. We use a lot of reusable water bottles for when we’re away from the house, and the controlled pour makes it incredibly easy to fill them.  Brita Stream with Filter-As-You-Pour Technology 2. Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning

Remember how I said I drank two cups of coffee before even touching a glass of water? Well, that’s a habit I knew I needed to break. It’s also something I wrote about, pointing out the benefits. Now I just need to follow my own advice, right?

Drinking that glass of water first thing in the morning is a really good way to start out your day. If my goal is 8 glasses a day, checking one glass off my list first thing feels pretty amazing.

3. Add flavor to your water

If drinking so much water seems a little mundane and hard to do, adding a few fruit slices, cucumbers or even herbs can kick your water up a notch. I’ve noticed by the end of the day, sometimes the thought of drinking another glass of water is the last thing I want to do. But if I add a few berries, mint or cucumber to it, I actually look forward to drinking it.

If you need some flavor ideas, be sure to read my post with 25 water recipe ideas.

4. Refill your water cup after every bathroom break

I’ve realized that getting to that 8 cups of water a day is just like any other habit. It’s learned and it’s something I have to train myself to do. One trick it to refill your water cup after every bathroom break you take. (Which you’ll be taking more of given the fact you’re upping your water intake.) Since I’m already up from my desk, it’s the perfect time to refill my cup.

You’ll notice after a couple of weeks of doing this, it’ll become second nature to you. You’ll also notice how much better you feel!

5. Swap sodas for water when eating out

When we eat out, I always order water as my drink. Long gone are the days of soda with my meal. Not only can this save you some money (water is usually free), but it helps you get to your goal of 8 glasses faster. Also, if you’re trying to lose a little bit of weight or stay at your current weight, sipping a glass of water before your meal makes you feel full. You’ll consume fewer calories and maybe even get to take home leftovers for the next day.

If we order dinner to go, we now skip the drinks and drink water at home. Again, it saves us money and is the healthier option.

Do you struggle with drinking enough water? I hope these tips help and if you have any tips of your own, please share!

Super Easy Pepper, Broccoli and Whole Mushroom Stir Fry Recipe

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Soy Vay. All opinions are 100% mine.

This pepper, broccoli, and whole mushroom stir fry recipe is so incredibly easy and full of amazing flavors. Whether it’s meatless Monday or you’re making dinner for a house full of vegetarians, this is a crowd-pleaser!

Cooking for Vegetarians

What started off as a one-month long experiment with my boys trying the vegetarian lifestyle, has now developed into their way of life. It’s been over a year and they’re still going strong. My husband, daughter and I both still eat meat, so it was a challenge figuring out meals. But one I was willing to tackle head on.

Since starting the challenge of cooking more vegetarian meals, I’ve eaten more vegetables and have tried more new vegetables than ever before. (Roasted asparagus anyone?) From keeping them cut up and ready to go in our fridge, to experimenting with them in meals, I’ve actually learned to love (and dare I say crave) vegetables.

One thing we eat a lot of is brown rice. I can cook it up in my Instant Pot in less than 30 minutes, plus it’s filling and we all love it. With brown rice as the base, I’ve created some pretty awesome Tex-Mex bowls and Stir Fry Recipes. Including this new one, I’m sharing today!

If you only have 30 minutes and you need a healthy meatless meal, this is the one for you.

Why Whole Mushrooms?

This pepper, broccoli, and whole mushroom stir fry recipe is so incredibly easy and full of amazing flavors. Whether it's meatless Monday or you're making dinner for a house full of vegetarians, this is a crowd-pleaser!

Before we get into the recipe, I want to answer the question you might be thinking…why whole mushrooms and not sliced? I just finished watching season 3 of Chef’s Table on Netflix and my favorite episode featured chef Jeong Kwan (who says she is not a chef) a 60-year-old Zen Buddhist monk who cooks daily meals for her community at the Baekyangsa Temple, 169 miles south of Seoul.

She calls her food temple food and watching her create these meals was amazing. There was one mushroom dish she cooked for her father when he came to visit her. He was worried about her way of life and also couldn’t understand how she didn’t eat meat! So, she made him her fried mushrooms, which she says are just as good (and like) meat. He ate her meal and was blown away by how great it tasted.

So I had to try it.

One thing she did to make the meal stand out was to cut little star like shapes on the top of the mushroom. (Pictured above.) It adds a uniqueness to the dish and I love how it turned out.

To create the same effect, I took a small knife and cut out part of the top of the mushroom, creating a star on top. This would be something fun to do for guests to wow them.

Pepper, Broccoli and Whole Mushroom Stir Fry Recipe

This pepper, broccoli, and whole mushroom stir fry recipe is so incredibly easy and full of amazing flavors. Whether it's meatless Monday or you're making dinner for a house full of vegetarians, this is a crowd-pleaser!

The base of this recipe, which gave it incredible flavor and also helped make the meal come together quickly, is Soy Vay Veri Veri Teriyaki Marinade. They use the finest ingredients around and it has no preservatives and no additives.

I picked it up at Target (it’s in the oriental grocery aisle) along with all of the other ingredients. Using this marinade is a simple way to bring flavor to your meal. It doesn’t require a lot of prep, which is huge for me! The simpler, the better.

Right now you can Save 20% with the Target Cartwheel app and try it for yourself!

Okay, enough storytelling…it’s recipe time.

1.Cut little stars out of the tops of the mushrooms. Marinate the mushrooms in the Soy Vay Veri Veri Teriyaki Marinade for about an hour, if you have time. It infuses the mushrooms with major flavor. If you don’t have time, marinate them while the rice is cooking.

2. Cook the rice.

3. While the rice is cooking, slice the bell peppers and cut up the broccoli into bite size pieces.

4. During the last 15 minutes of the rice cooking time, heat a Tablespoon of oil in a skillet. Take the mushrooms out of the marinade and place them in the heated oil. Cook for about 5 minutes, turning the mushrooms.

5. Remove the mushrooms from the skillet and set aside. Add a little more oil if necessary. Add the peppers and broccoli and cook for 2 to 3 minutes until the peppers start to get a little soft. Add the mushrooms back to the skillet and pour some Soy Vay Veri Veri Teriyaki Marinade over the vegetables to coat. Put the lid on and cook for another 5 minutes. The broccoli should turn a bright green and still be a bit crisp.

I’m happy to say that this recipe made this once hater of mushrooms, actually like them! There’s something about eating them whole + the flavor from the marinade + frying in oil that made the texture incredible and the flavor off the charts. I never in a million years thought I would enjoy mushrooms. Does that make me a grown up now?

Travel Style 101: The Best Travel Clothes for Women On the Go

Do you have any travel plans in your future? Come along with me as I share the best travel clothes for women on the go!

Do you have any travel plans in your future? Come along with me as I share the best travel clothes for women on the go!

In preparation for my year of travel, I’ve been doing some research on the best travel clothes + outfit ideas while exploring a new city. I can’t bring much with me, so I need to create a capsule wardrobe for all four seasons. No problem right? My closet will be the size of a small suitcase, which means I need to be smart about what I bring as well as how I store it. It should be interesting, to say the least!

Even though I’ll be on the go constantly and living in a small space, fashion will still be important to me. (I hope.) I want to look nice and be comfortable while exploring a new place. The key to making that happen is bringing items with me that all work together to create numerous outfits. This challenge is both exciting and overwhelming! You can definitely expect to see some articles on how I go about this in the near future.

A great travel outfit has a few key elements:

Layering + Comfortable + Versatile + Personal

Layering: Whether I’m in a car, on an airplane or walking around a new city, I get cold.

Comfortable: Traveling can be stressful, and at times, uncomfortable enough without having to fight with clothes that annoy you. The smartest outfit you can choose is one that fits you perfectly and doesn’t require any tugging (too short skirt), pulling up (pants that don’t fit your bum) or rearranging (a skirt that twists sideways).

Versatile: If you want to pack light, bringing clothes that all go together is key.

Personal: Creating a smart travel outfit doesn’t have to mean boring. Add an element that is YOU and gives your outfit some personality, whether that’s a hat, piece of jewelry or handbag.

Here’s one of my perfect travel outfits.

Do you have any travel plans in your future? Come along with me as I share the best travel clothes for women on the go! Do you have any travel plans in your future? Come along with me as I share the best travel clothes for women on the go!

Jeans: Avery Crop from Liverpool Jeans – I’ve mentioned before that since I have short legs, finding the perfect pair of jeans is a pain. I knew I needed a pair of ankle jeans to give me the length I wanted: not too long and not too short. These mid-rise cropped skinny jeans with open knee slits are my new go-to travel jeans. They are incredibly comfortable, have just enough stretch and are under $80! You can find them on Zappos.com (free shipping), Amazon.com and directly from Liverpooljeans.com.

Shirt: From my recent Stitch Fix box

Sweatshirt: Oldie but goodie from my closet. It’s Old Navy; similar one here.

Shoes: These have become my favorite sneakers for everything from working out to walking around town. They are Nike Women’s Tanjun Sneaker.

Tote Bag: JustFab.com

5 Ways to Avoid Germs at the Gym

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of CuVerro. All opinions are 100% mine.

Sickness has been sweeping through my friends’ homes and from what I’m reading online, flu season is definitely in full swing. So far we’ve been able to avoid getting sick and I’m crossing all of my fingers and toes hoping it’ll stay that way.

I’ve been extra careful at the grocery store to wipe down the cart with disinfectant wipes, plus regularly washing my hands to keep germs at bay. But there’s one place we go to get fit and healthy where germs love to hang out: the gym.

5 Ways to Avoid Germs at the Gym

Why the gym? Think about it. It’s warm. It’s sweaty. It’s usually a small space. And everything there is touched over and over again. Germs thrive at the gym, but thankfully there are a few things we can to do to avoid them; besides just staying home and skipping your workout altogether.

5 Ways to Avoid Germs at the Gym

Clean all fitness equipment before and after use

It’s easy to get a little lazy, especially if you’re in a hurry to get to work on time or home for the evening, but wiping down the equipment is incredibly important. At my local gym, you’re supposed to wipe it down after you use it, but the likelihood of that happening every single time is slim. So why take the chance?

I’ve seen people halfheartedly wipe it down before. I’ve seen people spray the equipment with the disinfectant solution and miss entirely, spraying the floor instead. I’ve seen people not wipe it down at all. If you spend any time at a gym, I’m sure you’ve witnessed the same thing.

That’s why you should wipe down anything you’re about to touch – from the free weights and the TV on the elliptical to the handles on the bike and any mats you use. Then wipe it down again after you use it. This protects you and other gym goers.

As you may know, for the past couple of months, I’ve been working with CuVerro®, which manufactures antimicrobial copper that continuously kills bacteria*. I’ve written about how to keep my kitchen environment and work space cleaner, as well as tested some items from my son’s backpack. I was a believer in the power of copper after reading some studies, but now after having experienced the results personally (meaning testing both copper and non-copper items), I am a firm believer in the benefits.

5 Ways to Avoid Germs at the Gym 5 Ways to Avoid Germs at the Gym 5 Ways to Avoid Germs at the Gym

(We tested one of our weights and got a reading of 686. Any reading below 300 means it’s ‘clean enough to eat off’.)

How does this relate to the gym and fitness equipment?

Cuverro works with Black Iron Strength® to make a line of antimicrobial copper fitness equipment that helps kill the bacteria that causes infections. One NCAA team equipped their strength training room with fitness products, made with CuVerro®  in an effort to support athletes and help keep them healthy. They were constantly having to wipe down and disinfect the equipment to prevent the spread of infections and they felt replacing some of the equipment with antimicrobial copper products was a no-brainer. “Winning teams are healthy teams,” said John Shackleton, head strength and conditioning coach for the Villanova Wildcat squad that defeated the University of North Carolina for the 2016 NCAA basketball title. “Using the Black Iron Strength® equipment not only helps us gain a competitive edge, it also means cutting down on the chances of infection. That’s especially important for a winter sport where student athletes are susceptible to a variety of infections .”

Imagine what a difference it would make if our gyms did the same thing. As you can see from the photo above, so many different pieces of fitness equipment can be made from CuVerro®. I would love those 5 lb. weights for my home!

Do not go barefoot

Whether you use the shower, the sauna or hot tub at your local gym, do not go barefoot. The locker room and sweaty, humid places are breeding grounds for germs – foot fungus in particular. Wear your flip-flops to protect your feet at all times.

Bring your own water

Drinking fountains are probably one of the dirtiest places in the gym. Why? Most likely, they are rarely sanitized, but they are touched by hands and unfortunately, mouths on a regular basis. You’re better off bringing your own water bottle from home and washing it at home every time it comes in contact with the gym. I like to use a water bottle that can be washed in the dishwasher. That way I know it’s getting a thorough cleaning.

Bring your own towel

I would like to think my local gym if offering me clean towels to use, but we don’t always know that for sure. Many gyms may transport clean and dirty towels in the same hamper, so you’re better off bringing your own.

Bring a separate towel for use while working out and one for after your shower.

Keep your gym gear clean

Your gym clothes are not only sweaty from working out, they’ve come in contact with all of the gym equipment. The best bet to making sure any germs on your clothes are taken care of, is to throw them in the wash when you get home. You can throw it in with your gym towels and be good to go for your next workout.

It’s also a good idea to disinfect your gym bag once you get home. Wipe down the outside, which might have come in contact with the gym floor, and the inside which was toting around your towels and gym clothes.

Have you ever caught a cold or gotten the flu and suspected it might have been from your recent gym visit? It’s amazing how being even a little proactive when it comes to germs and the gym, can keep you from coming down with a nasty virus.

How to Be Proactive About the Way You Feel, Inside and Out

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Renew Life. All opinions are 100% mine.

I learned something about myself not too long ago. I learned that I love to complain about how I feel (tired, cranky, unmotivated), but I wasn’t willing to be proactive with my health and do something about it. I’d say things like “I’m so tired of being tired.” Or, “These stomach pains are controlling my life.” Or, “I wish I just felt good!”

Complaining about the way I feel did nothing for me. It didn’t give me energy. It didn’t make my stomach feel better. It didn’t cure my headaches. And it sure as heck didn’t magically make me feel like a new woman. In fact, the complaining part just made me feel worse.

Healthy Living

I realized the only person who is in control of my health and in control of how I live each day, is ME. It was time to make some changes if I didn’t want to look back on my life and regret not making smarter health decisions. So here’s what I’ve done and what I’m starting to do so I can wake up each day feeling amazing.

How I’m Being Proactive About the Way I Feel, Inside and Out

What I’ve been doing:

Made eating healthy easier on myselfI wrote about this topic recently and how I sabotage my success when it comes to eating a healthier diet. How? By making junk food so incredibly convenient to eat and making healthy food an inconvenience.  Junk food was always easily accessible and ready to grab when I needed a snack. Healthy food was always sitting in a drawer in my refrigerator waiting to be washed and prepped. Now healthy options are convenient for me by doing some weekly prep.

Prepping snacks for healthy eating

Getting up and moving every day — Since I work from home, leaving the house every day just doesn’t happen. Plus, my oldest kids get themselves to school and my youngest is home-schooled. Needless to say, I’m not carting them around everywhere like when they were young.

Because of this, I started some very unhealthy habits of not getting outside and a) getting some much-needed vitamin D and b) getting exercise.

We recently started homeschooling our youngest, so as part of his P.E., he and I go on a walk/jog every day. It’s good one on one time and it gets me up and moving, which is necessary for so many reasons!

Daily Exercise

Drinking more water — I struggle horribly with migraines and I had a feeling one of the triggers was dehydration. I’m great at sipping on coffee or hot tea all day, but not when it comes to drinking enough water. So I made a goal to drink more water. I started off with making sure I drank four big glasses a day and then when I had that habit nailed down, I moved up my consumption. I knew if I tried to start off with a big goal, I would fail. So I took baby steps and it’s working.

What I’m starting to do:

Living digestively — What does that mean you ask? It means I’m taking my digestive health seriously and started taking a probiotic. I’ve heard about probiotics, but never looked into them to see if it’s something I could benefit from. Until now.

Probiotics

I’ve teamed up with RenewLife to try their product for myself.  I picked up a bottle of Ultimate Flora Extra Care Daily Probiotic and just started taking it. I’m quite excited! Yes, I’m excited about my digestive health. 😉 Why? Because there’s not a week that goes by that my stomach doesn’t hurt and I got to the point where I just lived with it.

Well, I’m done living with it and am ready to feel more energized, lighter and healthier. If taking a probiotic is new to you like it is to me, here are some details on the product I’m taking:

Decluttering to live simply — When it comes to my health, I know that what I choose to surround myself with makes a big impact. I need to heal my body from the inside out and part of that journey is getting rid of clutter to live a simpler life. I’ve started writing about this new passion of mine and have been blown away by your responses. It seems I’m not alone when it comes to desperately wanting to clear the clutter and live simply.

We just recently got serious about this and are selling/donating our possessions like crazy. It’s been very freeing to admit to myself that I can live with less and do it happily. Next up, is selling our house and downsizing. Needless to say, we have exciting plans ahead that include experiences and not things.

Have you made any changes in your life to be more proactive about your health? If so, I would love to hear what they are in the comments below!
