Packing the Perfect Purse for a Day of Travel

Thank you to Carefree® for sponsoring this post.

Our family is always thinking about that next trip we want to take; whether it’s back to Colorado, the state we love and was once called home, or exploring a new city in California. Back in March, we took a family trip to San Francisco and Yosemite. We spent the first half in a cabin enjoying the sights, hikes and amazing scenery Yosemite has to offer, and the second half touring San Francisco. It is definitely up there with one of our best vacations yet.

Yosemite National Park

When it comes to traveling, I am one of those women who like to be prepared. I’ve traveled quite a bit throughout Europe, Mexico and all over the United States in my 40 years of life. One thing I’ve learned,  is what to pack in my purse or backpack when I know I’ll be exploring a new city all day.

From life’s little surprises to that moment when I realize if I don’t eat a little something I’ll pass out, I’ve learned what necessities I need to pack and what extras to bring just in case.

Here’s what I pack in my purse for a day of sightseeing out and about in a new city.

Packing the Perfect Purse for a Day of Travel: From life’s little surprises to that moment when I realize if I don’t eat a little something I’ll pass out, I’ve learned what necessities I need to pack and what extras to bring just in case. Here’s what I pack in my purse for a day of sightseeing out and about in a new city.

Carefree® Acti-Fresh® liners: These liners are great to pack while traveling and to keep with me all the time in general. As women, our bodies like to surprise us don’t they? Whether that time of the month decides to show up unexpectedly or you’re not feeling so fresh and need something to help, Carefree Acti-Fresh liners are the perfect travel companion.  And don’t let the thinness fool you. These are very absorbent, plus the odor control gives you that boost of confidence you need.

Small Scissors: I bring these with me just because. You would be amazed at how many times I’ve used this tiny pair of scissors. From cutting tags off new sunglasses to loose threads from a shirt, they come in handy.

Medicines & Bandages: I carry with me my migraine medicine everywhere I go, plus pain reliever, stomach tablets and something for motion sickness. The little mint box you see actually holds pain reliever. I like to store them in tins instead of carrying around a bottle. Bandages are a necessity for life’s cuts, scrapes and blisters from wearing the wrong shoes while being on your feet all day. (Yes, I’m speaking from experience.)

Wipes and Hand Sanitizer: Whether it’s from a sticky ice cream cone your child just ate or there wasn’t any soap in a public restroom, both of these come in handy while traveling. I’ve wiped down tables at restaurants and given everyone a good dose of hand sanitizer before we’ve eaten on many occasions.

Stain remover & tissues: I keep these on hand because life gets messy doesn’t it? Especially while traveling.

Extra cash, ID and Debit Card: When I’m traveling for the day, I don’t like to carry a heavy wallet around with me. I leave my wallet locked in the safe at the hotel and only carry the bare necessities. If you’re traveling internationally, you’ll want to have your passport with you at all times.

Sunglasses, Lip balm & Gum: These are three essentials for me while out for the day; sunglasses for protecting my eyes from the sun, lip balm for keeping my lips from getting chapped and gum since I can’t brush my teeth after meals.

Water bottle: My entire family carries a reusable water bottle in their backpacks while we’re traveling. We fill them up before we leave for the day and refill them throughout the day from water fountains and restaurants that are kind enough to fill them for us. When flying, we empty the bottles before going through security and refill them while on the airplane. Keeping ourselves hydrated while traveling saves us from getting headaches and helps keep our energy level up.

Phone: Since I upgraded to a larger phone, I use it as my camera, e-reader, note pad and GPS. I also use it to look up restaurant reviews, fun things to do in the city and to find any other information I might need. This keeps my load lighter, which is always a plus while traveling.

Snacks: I don’t know about you, but traveling makes me hungry! It also makes my kids hungry, so carrying a few snacks to tide us over until we can find somewhere to eat a meal, helps a lot. When you mix being hungry + being in a new city + the tiredness that naturally comes along; it can make for some stressful moments. I like to carry with me almonds, pretzels and mini bars for a boost of energy.

Most of these items, excluding the water bottle and phone, fit nicely into small pouches. It keeps my bag organized and helps me find what I need in a jiffy.

The Carefree Acti-Fresh liners barely take up any space and fit into one of the pouches easily, leaving plenty of room for other items. When I’m traveling, I’ll often wear a liner just in case to keep me feeling fresh. It gives me the peace of mind I need, so I focus on the fun day ahead. Because the only surprises I want throughout the day are the exciting sights of the city! Are you with me on that?!

With a bag packed with all of the essentials, I’m ready for a day of travel and fun with the family. I like to carry either a soft cloth tote bag or a back pack instead of a handbag. It’s easier on my back and I don’t have the extra heaviness that many handbags add.

Do you have any tips for what to carry with you on a day of travel in a new city?

My Visit to Luxe Laser and Wellness Spa in Cedar Park, Texas

I was recently invited to the Luxe Laser and Wellness Spa in Cedar Park – one of the many suburbs of the great city of Austin, Texas for a laser treatment. The spa recently opened in June and I was excited to visit and hear about the services they offered.

Laser treatment has always intrigued me, but I’m very cautious when it comes to what I put on my skin and how I treat it. At least now that I’m in my 40s I am! I was very careless from my teenage years to mid 20s, really not caring or worrying  about the affects of the sun or how not taking care of my skin could make an impact on an older me. And of course with age comes fine lines, wrinkles, age spots and for me, major dryness – all causing my skin to look dull and lifeless at times.

After walking in and being greeted with a smile from Ashley, the spa director, I filled out some paper work and then met with their medical director, Dr. Larissa O’Neill. We discussed my concerns, what I was looking for in a service and also looking over my chart for anything hereditary I might want to go over.

After talking, we decided the first thing I wanted to take care of was the redness on my cheek area. For years I thought I had acne and was treating it as such, only to then be told it was actually rosacea (which is proof it’s a good idea to see a professional about any skin issues). Because of this, I have small red capillaries on my cheeks that cause redness and an uneven skin tone. It’s just something that bothers me so I never leave home without makeup on, because if I can cover it all, I will!

After chatting with the doctor, I spent time with Tina, their lead laser and injector specialist. She took such good care of me, taking the time needed to go over everything, and we decided a Genesis laser treatment would be perfect for my concerns. If you’ve never heard of a Genesis treatment, well then you’re in good company because neither had I.

Luxe Laser and Wellness Spa in Cedar Park, Texas

Basically it heats up the skin stimulating collagen regrowth and is good for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, redness caused by rosacea, as well as acne.

The treatment was incredibly relaxing, giving me a chance to just lay there and do nothing but breathe. She compared the treatment to what it feels like to lay down and soak up the sun’s rays, minus the skin damage of course. 😉 She also told me to let her know if it ever got too hot to where I was uncomfortable. It did heat up quite a bit, but was never painful or even uncomfortable.

So what did I think after one treatment? Let’s just say when I came home my husband said “you’re glowing!” I definitely noticed a difference in the appearance of my skin after just one treatment. I had less redness and an overall better looking skin tone. I plan on going in for two more treatments and expect I’ll see some amazing results.

Not only does this local spa offer a Genesis treatment, but many other services like acne treatment, cosmetic injections, tattoo removal, weight loss help and a number of other services. You can see the entire list here.

If you’re interested in having a treatment done, here are their specials for July through September:

  • 35% Off Laser Hair Removal

Also, their Grand Opening is September 15th where you’ll have the chance to tour the spa, win door prizes and receive some great discounts for that day.

After I’m done with my Genesis treatment plan, I want to have the capillaries on my legs taken care of. I have quite a few on the insides of my legs, as well as on the thigh area. It would be amazing to have that taken care of before next summer. It’ll help me feel more confident in shorts and dresses, and maybe even a bathing suit. 😉

I hope to see you at the Grand Opening and let me know if you have any questions about Luxe Laser and Wellness Spa. I can promise you you’ll be treated like a friend and will be very well taken care of.

Here’s where they’re located. Call today to schedule an appointment and tell them Julie from Mom Fabulous sent you!

Getting a meal on the table quickly and that everyone likes can sometimes be a challenge. I’ve been cooking for my family for 20 years and through that time I’ve learned there’s one type of meal I can serve where I can do no wrong. I’m talking about breakfast for dinner. From pancakes and waffles to fried potatoes and frittatas, these have become some of my go-to meals. So when I was asked me to try the new Jimmy Dean® Applewood or Hickory Smoked Bacon, it took me approximately 3 seconds to say ‘Yes!’

Because, well…BACON.

I’ve made just about every kind of frittata recipe you can imagine. From loaded baked potato to one chock full of vegetables, and they have all been flavorful and easy to whip up. One of my personal favorite ingredients in a frittata is bacon. I fry it up, cut it into large chunks and it adds such a nice element. Combine it with spinach and onions and my oh my do you have a winner.

I headed into my local Walmart with a list of my frittata ingredients: Jimmy Dean® Applewood Smoked Bacon, eggs, onion, fresh spinach, olive oil and milk. Would you like to see just how easy this Bacon and Spinach Frittata is to make? Check out this short video which shows you the step by step process. Watching it makes my mouth water!

After taste testing a piece of the Jimmy Dean® Bacon and then seeing the flavor it added to the frittata, I’m not sure why I haven’t bought this before. This is a premium bacon with a premium flavor.

How to Tackle My Project To-Do List with Confidence

Have you ever just almost lost it? You know, lost it to where your eye starts twitching a little, the room you’re in seems to shrink and if the next person breathes the wrong way (whatever that means) you’ll hurl a throw pillow their way? This is how I feel when my house is messy, my schedule is full, my refrigerator is empty and when someone so sweetly asks in the midst of this chaos “Mom, what’s for dinner?

trying to get it all done

Over the last couple of years my work life has been busy. Before you think I’m complaining, I’m not in any way, shape, or form complaining. I am so incredibly thankful that I’ve stayed busy and feel blessed to do what I do every day. But along with this added workload has come moments when I just don’t feel like I can keep up with of all of life’s demands. Mainly my house.

I remember waking up one morning and walking downstairs to a messy kitchen, stepping into a dirty tub to take a shower and then cleaning up a pile of dog hair off the carpet. That tightness in my chest hit and this was when I knew I needed help. I needed my house deep cleaned from top to bottom, but I had no idea who to ask for references or how to go about hiring someone to do the job and do it well.

logo

And then I was introduced to Thumbtack. When I decided to partner with Thumbtack I knew the first thing I wanted done was a deep clean of my home, and the second was a landscape project that’s been on my mind. (Our house lacks some serious curb appeal.)

When you think about hiring someone for a job you need done, how do you go about it? Probably the same way I do – you ask your friends. Word of mouth and someone who comes with references is huge, especially when you’re inviting that person into your home. Thumbtack was not only incredibly easy to navigate, but it felt like a word-of-mouth reference, which put my mind at ease.

Thumbtack website

Thumbtack is a single destination for getting what you need done, done. And, it’s free! From house cleaning and landscaping to guitar lessons and a personal trainer. They make it very easy to hire a professional you can trust.

Here’s the basics of the process:

  • They ask you a few questions about the service you need done
  • They present you with up to 5 pros who are qualified and ready to work
  • The pros give you a quote and you can also see their reviews and profiles
  • You can contact the professionals through the Thumbtack website or app and ask them any questions you need answered
  • You then choose who is right for you and hire them

I went through this process to hire a cleaning crew and will, without a doubt, be hiring them again. They came highly recommended and I can see why. After they were done, I walked into a home that smelled and looked incredible and you know how I felt? Like a ten ton weight had been lifted off my shoulders.

I now have a clean kitchen, including inside the microwave and oven.

clean kitchen

A clean dining room, including dusting all of my chairs and table.

dining room

Three clean bathrooms. (I took a bath in mine that night.)

clean bathroom

And an entire house that was clean.

After the crew was finished and had left, I smiled, look at my family and said two things: don’t touch a thing and we’re going out to eat! Ha!

Is there something or possibly several things you need done in your home and you just don’t how to go about hiring a trusted professional to get the job done? Well, with Thumbtack you can #ConsiderItDone. Imagine for a minute what that would feel like. Next on my list is a landscaping project and possibly a deck in the backyard. I want to sip my nightly glass of wine from a beautiful deck in my backyard. Oh, maybe even poolside! Now I’m just getting crazy. 😉

Facing Life’s Busy Moments with a Time to Refresh

I’ve read so many articles on how to live a balanced life or how to find more balance or how to balance everything. That word ‘balance’ is such an illusion and I am finally starting to realize that. When work is busy, my home suffers. The laundry piles up, the bathrooms don’t get wiped down and even the mail sits on my desk unopened.

But there are also times when work has to be put on the back burner and I just do the minimal amount necessary to get me by. Whether it’s because I’m not feeling well or we have some family fun planned, work is put to the side because my health and family come first.

Del Monte Refreshers - The adult fruit cup for your #TimeToRefresh

In the midst of all of this busyness, if I can step back and spend a few moments to refresh, then I feel a little more able to handle things. Some of my favorite ways to refresh and recharge are reading a book, working on my latest crochet project (I always have something waiting to be finished) or curling up with a magazine. I fuel my brain by not thinking about anything but what I’m currently doing and I fuel my body by having a snack.

I’m excited to share with you about something new to the fruit cup isle just for us adults. I’m talking about Dole Refreshers, your very own adult fruit cup!

Del Monte Refreshers - The adult fruit cup for your #TimeToRefresh

Each cup contains one serving of fruit with only 100 calories or less. Plus, there is no high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors or sweeteners. It’s a snack that tastes great and one you can feel good about.

I had the chance to try both the Pineapple in Passion Fruit Water and Mandarin Oranges in Coconut Water. I’m a sucker for pineapple, so that was my favorite. Neither one is too sweet, which makes it the perfect snack for me. One of my kids looked in the refrigerator and saw the Dole Refreshers and asked “What are those?” I responded with “Mom’s fruit cups. Don’t even think about it.” 😉

Not only are Dole Refreshers perfect as an afternoon pick me up, but they’re also great for a post-workout snack. Throw one in your gym bag with a plastic spoon and eat it on the go.

You can pick up your own Dole Refreshers at stores nationwide. Which one will you try first?

So tell me, do you believe in balance and that it’s possible? Also, how do you refresh when life gets busy? Let me know in the comments!

Your time to refresh is waiting for you! How to do you spend a few moments in your day to step back and refresh a little from life's busy moments. Whether it's with a run around the block, curling up with a good book or magazine or chatting with a friend, Dole Refreshers can accompany your moment. It's the fruit cup for adults! #TimeToRefresh

3 Quick Hairstyle Tricks for When You Woke Up Late for School

Sponsored post by Mirum Shopper. All opinions are my own.

If you’ve been in your local HEB the last couple of days, you may have noticed that all of the back to school supplies are out. Some of my friends’ kids go back as early as the first week of August, while mine head back towards the end. But I am all about preparing early, so I’m not faced with the stress of last minute shopping.

Back to school time is always so busy and HEB is making it easier on moms and dads by not only providing the school supplies on everyone’s list, but also products and ideas for quick meals and easy hairstyles that make a statement.

HEB back to school beauty products

I visited our local HEB to pick up some much needed hair products for my daughter and sons. My sons are big fans of Axe, and use quite a few of their hair and body products. My mom handed down to me a love of Suave and Dove and I’ve done the same for my daughter. The Suave Professionals Coconut Infusion Shampoo is incredible!

HEB Back to School

I don’t know about in your home, but in mine the first week of school is pretty crazy in the mornings. We’re all trying to adjust to our new schedules, after staying up late and sleeping in through the summer months.

So ladies and girls, for those mornings you’ve woken up late for school (which is bound to happen) here are three of my favorite quick hairstyle tricks to keep you looking stylish; even if you only have 15 minutes to get ready.

(Keep reading to learn how you can enter my Twitter sweeps to win a backpack full of your favorite Unilever products!)

Hairstyle Trick #1 The Scrunch and Blow Dry Technique

There are days I have time to wash my hair, curl it and spend quality time getting it just right. And then there are days when I wake up, take one good look at my hair and say “this will have to do”. But instead of walking out the door looking like I literally just rolled out of bed, I do this:

Quick Hairstyle Idea

  • Spray my hair with a little texturizing spray or homemade sea spray and scrunch it.
  • Take my blow dryer with the diffuser attached and give it a quick dry. This gives my hair some great texture and natural looking waves I love.

Hairstyle Trick #2 The Side Bun Technique

When my hair is driving me crazy and I can’t stand the thought of it touching my neck all day, I put it in a side bun. Sometimes I’ll do a messy bun on top, but the side bun is perfect for those of you who have short to medium length hair.

How to do a side bun

  • To get this look, pull all of your hair to one side, leaving a few loose strands by your ears (if desired). Wrap a small polyband around your hair once and then again securing the ends in the band, making a bun.
  • Take a couple of bobby pins and secure the side bun to your head, making sure the bobby pins have something to hold on to.
  • Spray with a bit of hairspray to hold.

How to do a side bun

Hairstyle Trick #3 The High Ponytail with Volume

If you woke up and your hair is stuck to your head with no volume whatsoever, this is the trick for you.

How to do a ponytail with volume

  • Spray your hair with some dry shampoo.
  • Take the top half of your hair and secure it high on your head with a small polyband. It will look like a half up half down hairstyle at this point.
  • Take the bottom half of your hair and join it with the top half by securing both sections together with another polyband.
  • Loosen some of the hair at your crown to give it some volume. Tease the ponytail if it looks a bit flat.

Voila! Three easy and quick hairstyles for those rushed morning. Which hairstyles are your go-tos for when you’re in a hurry? Let me know!

Also, be sure to visit your local HEB for their various in-store offers, as well as digital coupons on HEB.com. You’ll find up to $25 in savings on Unilever products during the Back to School Season.

HEB back to school 01

Now about that sweeps, here’s how to enter:

  • Click through HEB.com to take a look around
  • Reply to this tweet (will be live the morning of 7/22/16) with the recipe or grooming tip you would most like to try
  • It begins on July 22, 2016 and ends on July 29, 2016
  • Sweeps open to Texas residents only

Good luck!
