Dear Freshman: Advice from A College Sophomore

*I asked my daughter from Hello It’s Hannah, who is heading into her sophomore year of college if she would share a little of what she learned her first year. If your child is about to start their freshman year, I hope they’ll find these tips/advice helpful!

Hello there, friends. So I just finished my first year of college, and saying it was a rollercoaster is an understatement. I experienced intense stress, heartbreak, confusion, doubt, and countless other things. With all of that said, however, it was an amazing year, mistakes and all.

Throughout this year, I’ve learned several things I wish I knew when I’d started college, and I’m here today to share them with all of you incoming college freshman who is probably excited and terrified all at once.

You will have to work hard. 

For a good chunk of people, high school was easy peasy in terms of class difficulty. You could get an A or B without much work. This is absolutely not the case in college.

Class is 95% percent lecture, and 5% review, and that’s usually the day before the test. It is up to you to make sure you understand the material because there won’t be a whole lot of time for asking questions in class. If you really do have questions about the material, go to the professor’s office hours! They will absolutely help you. That’s what office hours are for. 

Utilize campus resources. 

One of the best things I did in college was utilize tutoring and learning labs. A lot of colleges have students in the class who have taken the class and gotten an A, and these students hold sessions for kids to come in and ask questions about the material. A lot of schools also have math or writing labs. Please use these resources! They don’t cost anything, and they are there purely to help you.

If your school doesn’t have either of these things, start a study group. Those are also incredibly useful. In fact, I was in a group once for French class, and someone in that group told me that our final was just over one chapter and not over the entire semester. I would have studied for days and been so burnt out had I not known that. 

You might not be besties with your roommate. 

Believe it or not, it’s actually pretty rare for roommates to become close friends. Most roommates just go about their everyday lives, hardly even talking to each other. If that’s the case, don’t worry. Just introduce yourself and ask a few questions about their major and things like that. If you don’t hit it off, that’s okay.

However, if you are a few weeks into the semester and you are having serious issues with your roommate, talk to your RA or Hall Director about the situation. Be calm and clear about the problems you’re having. 

Find an extracurricular or two that you like. 

The best thing about my freshman year was finding two organizations that I fit into really well. I made so many friends, especially towards the end of this year, and because of these clubs, I’m excited about going back to school instead of dreading it.

Find one or two clubs or activities you really enjoy at your school, and stick to them. During freshman orientation, there will probably be a club or activities fair set up with all of the organizations at the school. Go! It sounds exhausting (and it kind of is), but you’re bound to find something you like and it’ll set you up for an awesome first year. 

You will probably change your major. 

If you find yourself halfway into the year and your major is just not working for you, that’s perfectly normal. It’ll take some time and some adjusting to find out what you really want to do, and there will be people all along the way to help you out. So if you do want to change your major, don’t panic. It’s more common than you might think. 

Focus on your education first. 

College is incredibly exciting, and there are so many new things happening. You’ll meet new friends, find extracurriculars you like, and maybe you’ll meet someone special. In the midst of all of this, however, it’s important that your education takes precedence over social activities.

If you’re invited to go out with friends and you have a biology test the next day you haven’t studied for, let your friends know that you really need to study and that you’ll hang out with them that weekend or something. It may seem boring now, but you’ll thank yourself later for focusing on school first.  

Please go to class! 

Even if attendance isn’t required (yes, that does exist), go anyway. You are paying for these classes and you don’t want to waste opportunity and money by skipping class.

With all that said, if you are really and truly sick and you have to miss class, that’s another story, School is important, but health takes precedence over all. Visit the clinic on campus or go to another doctor if there isn’t. Also, email your professor if you know you’ll be absent. This shows initiative and that you care about the class. They’ll remember that later. 

I hope all of the advice helps you through your first year of college! College is your first time being on your own, and although it comes with a lot of responsibility, you’ll learn so much about yourself and what you want out of life. Have fun!

How to Make Your Office Space A Happy Place

Feeling calm and relaxed during work time is essential for efficiently getting things done and minimizing stress. But feeling relaxed in your office space can be difficult, and can actually seem impossible when you have hundreds of emails, deadlines, and papers piling up. However,  your office space has a direct effect on your mood and productivity. So here are several ways to make sure your office is a place you look forward to instead of dread.

1) Put Up Photos 

Putting up pictures of things that make you happy will help make the office a less stressful place. You can put up pictures of your spouse, your kids, or even a peaceful green landscape or ocean. Seeing these pictures of your loved ones and landscapes you find peaceful will boost your mood as you work. It also personalizes your space, making it really seem like your own. You can also put up inspirational quotes if you would like.

2) Natural Light 

A dark office space is the number one thing that can make working more stressful than it should be, and can also make you feel terrible over time. The sun provides Vitamin D, a vitamin essential to your happiness, so it’s important that you have plenty of natural light in your office space.

On top of that, your eyes will strain staring at a bright screen, and you may feel more tired than you really are. This could also cause headaches or make a persisting one worse. Be sure to have plenty of natural light by your office space to prevent this. If there isn’t any, invest in a light box to keep on your desk.

3) Plants 

Indoor plants are a great way to make your office space a happy place. In recent years, it’s been discovered that having plants by your office space may increase happiness. Also, seeing it grow provides something to look forward to when you go into your office space every day. If you aren’t sure about keeping a plant that needs constant taking care of, try getting a cactus or a succulent.

4) Your Seat 

Being uncomfortable can make your mood at work even worse and can have lasting negative effects on your body. Your posture can worsen and you can gain back problems, making sitting at work even more difficult. Invest in a nice chair or seat cushion to make sure your body is being treated well while you are working.

5) Scent 

Certain scents can help wake you up and even improve your mood and productivity. It can even have as much of an impact on your physical surroundings. If you work from home, try getting an essential oil diffuser or a candle with your favorite scent. If you’re in an office, get a bottle of your favorite essential oil and dab some on your wrists throughout the day. You can also get a necklace that holds an essential oil. Here are some common oils:

5 Summer Outfits That Cover Your Arms

The summer heat has arrived in most places and that usually means less clothing so we can all stay cool. But not every woman likes wearing sleeveless tops. So how does one dress to stay cool? Here are five summer outfits that cover your arms, are stylish and will keep you cool.

We all have areas of our bodies that aren’t exactly our favorites. Some women don’t like shorts, while others opt for bathing suit alternatives

I’ve mentioned several times that my legs are the area I struggle with the most. So you’ll rarely see me in shorts and instead in light weight denim, cropped pants and skirts. This used to bother me, but now I focus on the areas of my body I do like and make sure I wear outfits that enhance those, instead of moaning and groaning about it. (Disclosure: sometimes I still moan and groan about it.)

When it comes to summer outfits that cover your arms but still help you stay cool, I’ve featured three different styles that are my favorite. They’re my favorite because they are stylish, lightweight and the perfect alternatives to sleeveless tops. 

The tops are: cold shoulder, boho, and chambray.

Cold Shoulder Tops

Now I know cold shoulder tops are not for everyone. One time a Facebook friend of mine went on quite the rant about these ‘ridiculous’ tops and how they make no sense. Each to their own, right? Not only do they make sense to me, I love them! I still have the benefit of what sleeveless tops offer (air flow) but they cover the bottom of my arms, an area a lot of women don’t care for.

If you’ve never tried this style, I highly recommend heading to your favorite store and at least trying them on. You might walk out with one and you might not! But I’ve seen women of all ages wear these and they look fantastic.

Let’s talk about H&M and Forever 21 for a minute, shall we? I’ve had readers ask me why in the world I link to these stores because they feel they’re for the youngins and here’s why…because I shop there. Yes, I’ve been in both stores a time or two and felt like the sales associates were looking at me like ‘why are you here lady?’, but I really just don’t care. I like their denim for the stretch and price, and I like their accessories. I also love their online ordering. No weird looks from 19-year-old sales associates included. 😉

The wedge sandals I linked to above, I own and am so pleased with them. They don’t come in half sizes, so I was a little worried when I ordered size 8, even though I wear 8 1/2, but they fit great. I wore them to a wedding recently and was in them for hours. They look really good with jeans, shorts, dresses, and skirts. Such a versatile shoe!

Boho Tops

This style of top is perfect for summer because it’s flowy and allows some breeze to slip through. (Unlike a lot of cotton t-shirts.) When it comes to boho tops for the summer, I look for ones with 3/4 sleeves and save the long sleeve style for fall.

I really like the mustard top and white denim combo. In my summer trends for 2017 post, I shared how yellow is a big trend. It took me awhile to fully embrace this color, but after I did, it became a favorite.

When it comes to white denim, I know it’s not for everyone. If you have babies and toddlers, your white jeans will surely see a stain before breakfast is even served. Now that my kids are older and out of that stage, I regularly wear white denim and yes, there are days they see a stain. 

I keep saying I’m going to purchase a pair of Old Navy’s Stay White Jeans that repel stains, but I haven’t yet. A few of my friends rave about them though. The white boho top pictured above is so pretty! It’s called the Circle of Love Top and features crochet lace. I decided to pair it up with a skirt for a different style of outfit, but this top would equally look perfect with jeans or shorts.

Chambray Top

Believe it or not, a chambray top is great for summer. As long as you pick the right one! Choose one that has tabbed sleeves or ones you can roll up easy. You also want it to be very lightweight.

I have a chambray top I’ve been wearing off and on all summer, even in hot temps and it’s been such a great go-to piece. I wore it over a tank on a hike the other day, with shorts, denim, and even a skirt. It’s a very versatile top that might just become your favorite this summer. (And it covers your arms!) 🙂

I really like how this chambray shirt looks with the orange shorts and striped tote. The shorts are from prAna, a brand I have come to love. The shirt is from J. 10 Pixi Products and Why I Love Them

I’ve always loved makeup ever since I was a kid. The process, the way someone can take different products and put them together to create something totally unique. It all just fascinates me, and recently, I got the chance to try out some new products from Pixi Beauty.

Have you tried any Pixi Products yet? If not, you're missing out! From their makeup to their skin care, I am in love with it all. The skin care makes my skin glow and the makeup enhances the glow. Here are my top 10 most favorite Pixi products I think you'll want to try.

After trying out quite a few of their products, I can officially say they are my favorite makeup brand. Everything from the packaging of the makeup products to the results I got from using their skin care just really amazed me.

And today, I have ranked my favorite products from Pixi and why I love them so much. It’s difficult to rank them because I love them all,  but I’ll try 🙂 

10 Pixi Products and Why I Love Them

 10. Pixi Blush 

This blush was a collaboration with Aspyn Ovard, and I use it almost every day. It gives that perfect, healthy pink glow without too much color, and even adds a little bit of sparkle. 

I have been looking for a good highlight and contour brush for a while now, and this one takes the cake. It’s a dual end brush with a “strobe” side, a pointed brush, and a “sculpt” side, a fanned brush for contour. It does the trick perfectly and is incredibly soft. 

 I haven’t gone a single day without using this palette in the past few weeks. It has three highlight colors and three contour colors. The variety is wonderful, from matte to shimmery contour, and gold to coral highlights. The gold highlight is my personal favorite, along with the light brown, shimmery contour. Definitely, a must have in my makeup collection. 

This was one of the first products I got from Pixi, and it absolutely did not disappoint (and therefore began my obsession). It’s another collaboration with Aspyn Ovard, and it’s a single pearly highlight, the same size as the blush. I used it every day, a little bit on my cheeks and some on my cheekbones. So gorgeous. 

This product is a twist on the classic Pixi Glow Tonic everyone loves so much (and for good reason). It’s the same product, only in travel-friendly pads instead of a bottle. They come in a round container with a twist lid, perfect for on the road. Also, there’s 60 of them in each container! 

 5. Glow Mud Cleanser 

 This cleanser is my skin’s lifesaver. It has glycolic acid and aloe vera, two ingredients that help reduce acne breakouts. Not to mention, the GLOW (hence the term Glow Cleanser). My skin is left soft, smooth, and with a gorgeous healthy glow. Highly recommend this cleanser. 

This is the best scrub/exfoliator I’ve ever used. It smells great and leaves my skin SO soft and free of dead skin. You just massage it on your face for 30 seconds, wash it off with warm water, and voila: the smoothest and softest skin. 

I have never been able to get behind cheek tint. It usually either doesn’t give enough color or gives way too much. But this one from Pixi is sheer but buildable, so you can add as much (or as little) color as you want. There are three shades: rosy, natural, and flushed. My favorite is rosy, a light red that gives the perfect amount of color to my cheeks 

Honestly, all of Pixi’s skincare blows me away, but this serum is my number one favorite from the line. Just two or three drops is enough to cover your whole face. You put it on before your moisturizer and leave it on overnight for a pretty, glowy skin the next morning. Also, it’s a gentle exfoliator that gets rid of dead skin overnight. Amazing, right? 

And finally, my favorite Pixi product: their new Tint + Gloss lippies. It’s a dual sided product with a lip tint on one side, and a sheer gloss on the other. The gloss keeps the tint from drying out the lips, and either the tint or gloss can be worn alone. I’ve been wearing (Insert gloss here) for the past week, and it’s my go to lippie now.

3 Things To Do Before Getting Out Of Bed (For An Awesome Day)

I am not a morning person, but I really dislike waking up in a grumpy mood. Here are 3 quick things I can do before my feet hit the ground to help me start my day off right.How to have an awesome day: I am not a morning person, but I really dislike waking up in a grumpy mood. Here are 3 quick things I can do before my feet hit the ground to help me start my day off right.Everyone wants to wake up, get out of bed, and be able to start their day in a good mood. However, automatically waking up in a good mood isn’t very common and is often difficult, especially if your night of sleep was less than ideal or the day ahead is going to be stressful. But, there are some ways you can start your day off with a heart full of gratitude and make leaving your cozy bed a little bit easier. 

3 Things To Do Before Getting Out Of Bed (For An Awesome Day)

1) Stretch 

The first thing I do when I wake up is stretch. Why? Because my first temptation when I wake up is to press the snooze button and get right back in bed. But stretching helps you wake up and prevents the urge to go back to sleep. Your muscles will feel less stiff and more relaxed, which is great if you sit at a desk often. Your range of movement throughout the day will increase, and you may even feel more relaxed.

Stretching in the morning has the ability to help your brain pause during your hectic morning routine, and relax. It’s just a few minutes dedicated to yourself to help get your day started on the right foot. 

2) Meditate 

After your stretches, take a couple minutes to meditate on what you are grateful for. You can do this by yourself with no noise, listening to music, or even listening to a meditation app. (There are so many free ones out there. There’s one for everybody!)

This is my favorite part of the day because it puts everything in perspective, especially when I wake up stressed or dreading the tasks I have to do on that day. Like stretching, it’s a break from a stressful morning routine. It also helps maintain a habit of mindfulness, which can be really difficult on busy mornings.

3) Smile 

They say that smiling can instantly perk you up and help set the tone for the day. When you smile, the brain releases different chemicals (serotonin, dopamine, and endorphins) that instantly make you feel just a little bit happier. Doing this first thing in the morning can be really beneficial to your brain, more than you might think, and your overall health can improve.

It’s like that old quote: “A smile is a curve that sets everything straight.”
