A Simple Guide to Choosing the Right Lipstick Color for Your Skin Tone

If you’re having a hard time choosing the right lipstick color for your skin tone, you are not alone. Too many times we come home with a tube that we think is going to look great and then we put it on only to discover it’s not so great. It’s too pink, too red, too dark, too something – whatever it’s “too” of, we know it’s just not right for us.

Part of finding the perfect shade of lipstick is through trial and error and part of it is knowing the right shades for your skin tone.

A Simple Guide to Choosing the Right Lipstick Color for Your Skin Tone - Whether you're fair skin and warm-toned or olive skin and neutral-toned, this easy guide will help steer you in the right direction towards purchasing lipsticks that work for you.

How to Choose the Right Lipstick Color for Your Skin Tone

Okay, so I could get really sciencey here (not even a word) and have you look at your skin tone and your veins and break out some ancestry dot com (okay not really), but I am all about making things incredibly simple. If you’re like me, you don’t want to read a super long article about all that jazz – you just want for me to steer you in the right direction and show you some pictures of women with skin tones and hair color similar to yours, so you can check out their lip colors. Am I on the right track here?

Perfect.

So let’s break this down as simple as possible:

Fair skin: You look great in true reds, corals, pinks, and nudes. Avoid deep browns, chocolates and anything too light. Just be aware that any lipstick is going to appear brighter on your fair skin.

I definitely think when it comes to fair skin and lipstick, MAC wins the prize here. Their colors are gorgeous and richly pigmented. They last throughout the day and are highly rated for a reason. Plus, you can head to your local MAC store and try before you buy.

Now to give you a visual idea of what lip colors work well on this skin tone, here are some celebrities with fair skin.

Know Your Undertone

Here’s why you should know your undertone. It’ll help when you choose the type of lipstick. Meaning all reds (and pinks and oranges and purples, etc.) are not the same. There are ones with a slight blue tinge and ones with a little bit of orange, and then there are the reddish pinks and on and on.

There are three different undertones: cool, warm and neutral.

cool-tonesYou are cool-toned if you look at the underside of your arm and your veins are blue, or your skin has a pink or reddish tinge to it. Usually, you burn easily and you look better (not you like better) in silver and platinum metals. Cool-tones usually have blue, gray, or green eyes.

For cool toned ladies choose lipsticks with blue or purple shaded undertones look best. When choosing a red lipstick, stay away from ones that have an orange tint to them. You can wear magenta, reds with pink undertones and those gorgeous rosy pinks really well.

warm-tonesYou are warm-toned if your veins look greenish and your skin has a yellow or peach tinge to it. Typically, you look better in gold jewelry and your eye color is brown, amber, or hazel. When you’re out in the sun, your skin turns a golden-brown, even if you burn first.

For warm-tones ladies, go for those really red reds and oranges, tangerines, warm colors like beige and beautiful shades of coral.

You are neutral-toned if you don’t seem to fall into either of these categories. Your veins can look almost a teal color and you can easily rock both silver and gold jewelry. This also means you can get by with wearing all kinds of different colors. Lucky gal!

For you neutral-toned ladies, just go for it and experiment with everything!

When in doubt, visit a Sephora or a beauty counter so you can try before you buy. Once you get comfortable with your lipstick colors, then purchasing them at the drugstore or grocery store will become easier. Before you know it, you’ll be choosing your lipstick colors for your skin tone (and maybe even your friends’) like a pro.

A No-Fuss Girls Night In Get Together Idea

*This blog post was sponsored by Starbucks but the opinions are completely my own based on my experience.

After a long week at work, probably the last thing on your mind this Holiday season is DIYing goodie bags with fancy chalkboard lettered gift tags, making complicated appetizers and setting a tablescape that could rival Martha’s. But yet, you still want to get the girls together right? My guess is your girlfriends would be over the moon happy with chocolate, coffee, movies and some Holiday jingle action with a twist. Keep reading to see what I’m talking about.

Girls Night In Party Ideas - get the girls together and indulge with some decadent (yet affordable) coffee and chocolate. If you're like me, it's been too long since you've just sat and caught up with what's happening in your girlfriends' lives. 'Tis the season for friends.

After a recent trip to Target, I picked up the perfect pairings for a no-fuss girls night in coffee and chocolate get together. I’m talking about Starbucks Peppermint Mocha Caffe Latte K-Cups and Lindt LINDOR Peppermint Cookie Milk Chocolate Truffles. Is your mouth watering yet?

I thought it would be fun to set a festive Holiday table for everyone to sit at, catch up with each other and just enjoy relaxing with some good coffee, chocolate, and conversation.

Here’s what I set the table with:

  • A Holiday colored place mat
  • A simple place card made with black paper and a chalkboard pen (no fancy lettering needed)
  • Candy Canes shaped in a heart (of course)
  • Saucer for mug
  • Holiday mug
  • Small container filled with LINDOR Truffles
  • Starbucks Peppermint Mocha Latte K-Cup packs
  • Jingle Bells our way print out

I had never heard of the Peppermint Mocha Caffe Latte K-Cups before. It’s a 2-step process that is oh so worth it. Your guests can make their own and then either sit back down at the table for some girl talk, Jingle Bells our way laughs or take their mug to the living room for movie time.

Here’s how to make the coffee.

Step one: Pour the sweetened dairy blend in your mug.

Step two: Brew the K-cup over the dairy blend into your mug. Stir and enjoy!

It’s pepperminty chocolatey goodness at its best. And when paired with the Lindt LINDOR Peppermint Truffles, it makes for one luxurious evening.

The Jingle Bells our way is a mad lib style fill in the blank song. It’ll help put a little laughter and fun into your evening (if you even need it!). Print out the copy below, place one at each guest’s seat and have them fill it out. Be sure to have them sing their version before the night is over. 😉

Starbucks & Lindt are the Perfect Pairings! Here’s how to save on these two for the Holidays:

  • Buy 3 Starbucks (VIA, Roast and Ground Coffee & K-Cups), Save $6, until December 31st
  • Buy 2 Lindt Lindor items for $8, until December 24th

Do you get together with friends for the Holidays? This is the time of year to kick back and catch up with those you haven’t talked with in far too long.

Happy Holidays my friends!

Your Guide to The Ultimate DIY Indoor Fort for Hours of Indoor Play

Finding ways to keep your little ones entertained at home can feel like a daunting task, especially when you live in a very cold climate and have energetic kids. This challenging situation is often enough to make mom and dad want to go curl up in a corner, rock back and forth and quietly sing Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” while munching on leftover goldfish crackers from lunch. I remember thinking to myself, if I can just make it to nap time I will survive and then a few hours later…If I can just make it to bedtime, I will survive.

When my oldest was barely two years old, we moved to Alaska and then eight months later I had my second child. We made it through several brutal winters! Three years and one more child later, we moved to Colorado where the winters were much more bearable, but we definitely had our days when everyone just needed to stay indoors.

Your Guide to The Ultimate DIY Indoor Fort for Hours of Indoor Play

Through all of these winters, I learned a thing or two about keeping active kids busy indoors and one of those was to just let kids be kids — let them mess the house up and build a fort. If that meant getting out every pillow, blanket, chair and couch cushion we owned, then so be it. They often took much more time building the fort and cleaning it up than they did enjoying the fort, but that was all part of the process of keeping them active and busy.

Your Guide to The Ultimate DIY Indoor Fort for Hours of Indoor Play

Over the years, my 12-year-old has become quite the fort building master. Although we live in Texas now and really the only weather issues we have to deal with are 100+ temperatures and some rain here and there, I’ll often come downstairs to our living room overtaken by some massive fort creation he and a friend built.

Here are his Fort Building 101 tips:

  • Don’t try to build a fort by yourself; you’ll just get frustrated. It’s more fun with a friend, sibling or parent anyway

Your Guide to The Ultimate DIY Indoor Fort for Hours of Indoor Play

  • Use a combination of chairs and your couch for a larger and sturdier fort

Your Guide to The Ultimate DIY Indoor Fort for Hours of Indoor Play

  • Start with the largest blanket as the main ‘roof’ of your fort
  • Use smaller blankets to close off the openings to make it dark
  • Use clamps to secure the blankets to chairs if you can (I’ve used close pins and chip clips before)

Your Guide to The Ultimate DIY Indoor Fort for Hours of Indoor Play

Aren’t these tips great? I love it! I helped him build a fort in our living room and learned a thing or two. One thing I’ve always tried to do for the kids in order to keep them in that fort just a little bit longer is to prepare a tray of snacks for them and load up some movies on the tablet. And if I remember correctly, I’ve had a kiddo fall asleep a time or two in their fort.

Your Guide to The Ultimate DIY Indoor Fort for Hours of Indoor Play

For our snack tray, I popped some popcorn and put it into brown paper bags. I also included some fruit and candy fish (some of our favorites).

Your Guide to The Ultimate DIY Indoor Fort for Hours of Indoor Play

Keeping the kiddos hydrated is also important, so I added Tum-E Yummies beverages, which I like for a number of reasons. The container is perfect for sipping on in the fort since it’s a spill-proof sports cap. They come in flavors kids’ love which includes: Very Berry Blue, Greentastic Apple, Fruitabulous Punch, Orange-arific, and Sour-sational Raspberry. Plus, the flavors have 100% daily value vitamin C, B6, B12 and only 50 calories and 13g of sugar and no sodium.  It’s a drink parents can feel good about giving their kids and a drink kids enjoy. Win-win.

Your Guide to The Ultimate DIY Indoor Fort for Hours of Indoor Play

I crawled in the fort with my son and let me tell you, I could get used to a cozy space like this. If there are snacks, a movie, and my pillow included of course.

If you live in the south, then you know all too well how unpredictable the winters can be. One day it’s in the 80s and the next morning you wake up to frost on the ground. There’s really no way to plan your outfits and you’ll often find yourself asking ‘do I need a coat today?

Use code DEC30 to get 30% off the Newbury Topper and other items on JJill.com today!

One way I’ve found to dress for days that are too warm for a coat, but too breezy for a cardigan are with toppers. I wore one a lot last year and just added a second one, which is new to the J. Jill line this year. It’s the Newbury topper and the colors are beautiful and perfect for this time of year.

I paired mine with a sleeveless linen tank because the day we shot these pictures was quite warm. You could also throw this over an all black outfit, like the model is wearing here, for a nice way to complete the outfit. The topper is quite long and is described as above knee length on their website. I’m 5′ 5″ and it’s definitely below my knees, but I still love it and get a lot of wear out of these in the fall and winter.

J. Jill has quite a few toppers, including several on sale from past seasons. You can check them all out here. One thing I like about investing in these toppers is if well taken care of, this is an item of clothing that I will use for years and years to come. It’s a classic style of cardigan that I feel is here to stay and isn’t trendy or something that will come and go.

Stocking Stuffer Ideas for the Man in Your Life

*Sponsored post by Mirum. All opinions are my own.

Without a doubt, every year my favorite part of getting the presents ready for Christmas morning are the stockings. For my daughter, it’s always been easy to put her stocking together. A little candy here. A little makeup there. Some stationary. Maybe some undergarments and cute socks….and we’re good to go! My boys are a little harder, but usually it’s cologne, some candy, socks with personality (boring socks are a no-no), and other last minute items I can find.

Needless to say, our kids are pretty easy to please in the stocking department. But what about those husbands? How does one pull together a guy-approved stocking that’ll win over his heart and his stomach? Here are a few ideas.

Stocking Stuffers for guys Stocking Stuffers for Guys

I headed to our local Walmart and picked up a few things which included:

  • 26 pack of Slim Jims
  • Warm socks
  • Underwear
  • Gloves

Stocking Stuffers for guys

Other items I saw:

  • Patterned dress socks
  • Stocking caps
  • Watches

Stocking Stuffers for guys

These are all items I know my husband will enjoy and use. While candy canes are great and something my daughter loves and will eat, my husband would prefer something a little heartier to eat in his stocking. He’s also extremely practical and wants items he’ll actually get some use out of, so the socks, underwear, and gloves are the perfect guy approved stocking stuffer for him. I know he’ll be very pleased with Santa’s choices come Christmas morning. :)

Shop Slim Jim at Walmart and enter for a chance to win a $100 Walmart gift card. Just head to this link on Walmart.com and create a man approved stocking, which will count as your entry into their $100 gift card sweepstakes. Good luck!!

A Few Ways to Provide a Cleaner Cooking Environment In My Home

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of CuVerro. All opinions are 100% mine.

Have you seen the meme where it’s a picture of an immaculate house and it says “Please excuse the mess?” I laugh every time I see that picture because that used to be me. You know, the woman who is constantly apologizing for a mess that doesn’t even exist. I’ve definitely gotten better over the years. Older and wiser I guess, right? Can you relate to that or do you lean more towards the middle where people can take your mess or leave it?  house-cleaning-tips-04 I’ve always been good at keeping the clutter under control, but it’s keeping things clean that I need help with. In fact, I would go as far as to say I seriously hate cleaning. If you set a load of laundry or a dust rag in front of me, I’ll pick the laundry every single time.

But recently, more than ever, my eyes have been opened as to just how dirty my house can get and how I should make more of an effort, and some simple adjustments here and there, to keeping it clean and my family healthier in the process.

Over the next few months, I’ll be shedding some light on just how dirty my world around me is. Doesn’t that sound like a blast? Ha! I think it’s something I need to be aware of and that’s why when CuVerro®,, which is a special bacteria-killing copper, reached out to me to partner up, I said yes. cuverro-03

You’ll be hearing a lot more about this company and their mission in the coming months, which I’m excited about. Copper is a proven surface that has the ability to kill bacteria and create healthier environments you care about – whether that’s your home, hospital, day care facility or fitness center.

Testing Surfaces In My Kitchen

I was sent a tool to test/swab surfaces in my home that I frequently touch to see how dirty they are. I thought the best place to start would be my kitchen since this seems to be one of the most important places to be kept clean. This is where I’m handling food that my family eats after all! cuverro-01 luck-and-cuverro-1-of-26 luck-and-cuverro-2-of-26

I tested the kitchen counter near the stove and our kitchen island first and they were both embarrassingly dirty. (If you’re wondering what tool I’m using to test, it’s an ATP tool and yes, I did feel like a very cool scientist. I even have test tubes in my refrigerator right now.)  What shocked me and made my mouth drop to the floor was the test we ran on my cell phone. I swabbed the case and I had an idea it would be pretty dirty, but when I got a reading over 3,000 it made me feel slightly sick to my stomach. Anything over 300 is considered unsanitary. That is not good!

luck-and-cuverro-3-of-26 luck-and-cuverro-4-of-26

My phone goes everywhere with me and most recently it’s been in an airport, airplane, hotel, hotel bathroom…you get the idea. And like you I imagine, sometimes I cook and use my phone at the same time. But I don’t always think to wash my hands in between touching my cell phone and handling our food. Please tell me I’m not the only one. Pretty please? Here are a few changes I plan on making after seeing these testing results:

  • Wash my hands in between cell phone uses (every single time)
  • Disinfect cell phone case
  • Look into copper cell phone cases made by CuVerro (they currently sell cases for iPhone 6 and 6s)
  • Maybe not using my phone at all while I cook and eat!

cuverro-02 Are you familiar with the EPA testing results that copper surfaces have been proven to kill 99.9% of bacteria within 2 hours of exposure? I wasn’t either. I grew up with copper as decor in my parents’ home and now it’s a hot commodity found at thrift stores and flea markets among my friends. But I’ve read the scientific proof, I’ve looked over the CuVerro website and although I’m no scientist – it makes sense to me.

Now, I want to get real with you all here for a minute. I’m not one of those germaphobes and I don’t think I ever will be. But my husband and I are getting older and recently we both made the comment that we just don’t ever feel 100%. We don’t smoke. We don’t drink a lot, other than the glass of wine and cocktail here and there. We eat healthy, although we could probably do better. And yes, we could use help in the exercise department.

But if there are changes here and there we can make in our home to kill harmful bacteria, I’m all for it. And if our hospitals, doctor’s offices and gyms can switch out surfaces for copper, knowing they can make a huge impact on the overall health of the environment don’t you think they should try? I certainly do.

Here are a few ways you can make a difference in your home or community when it comes to getting the word out:

1) First, educate yourself

2) Reach out directly to the leaders in your community and ask them to bring copper into places where it can really help – hospitals, schools, doctor’s offices, healthcare providers

3) Share this blog post and tag someone that can make a difference

4)Browse the catalog or products on CuVerro to see what you can use in your own home

Here are a couple of fun questions for you:

  • What do you think the dirtiest space in your home is?
  • What do you think I should test next?

I can’t wait to see your answers. (Please don’t say the toilet. I mean really…we know it’s dirty. Get creative!) For more ‘Eww…‘ check out CleanAsCopper.com!

5 Holiday Makeup Looks That Actually Seem Doable

If you think glitter, glitz and glam are great for the Christmas tree, but not so much for your makeup, you might just change your mind when you have a look at these five Holiday makeup looks. They actually seem quite doable!

If you think glitter, glitz and glam are great for the Christmas tree, but not so much for your makeup, you might just change your mind when you have a look at these five Holiday makeup looks. They actually seem quite doable!

I don’t know about you, but in the past when I’ve been invited to a Holiday party, I’ve spent way too long deciding what I’m going to wear and never thought about my makeup or hair until it was actually time to do it. I remember all too well one time trying a new smokey eye look and failing miserably, which resulted in having to start over completely on my makeup. That was the first and the last time I tried a smokey eye.

Now, I aim for simplicity and looks I’ve tried before – with maybe a tad bit of glitter here or some glam there. I feel pretty and dressed up more than normal, plus I’m not stressed out. What’s the moral of this story? Practice before the party and go with what you feel comfortable with. Also, simple is usually best!

Here are five holiday makeup looks I found that actually seem doable, as well as product recommendations.

5 Holiday Makeup Looks

The Sparkle Smudge

I love this idea because I immediately thought ‘I smudge my makeup on accident all the time – I can so do this!‘.  She recommends using a long wear eyeliner. Two of my favorites are Laura Mercier or Nars.  Next, you’ll want a sparkle eyeshadow you love. I’ve used L’Oreal Paris Infallible in several colors and love the shimmer and pigment. You can see all of the colors they have here. The step is two coats of your favorite volumizing mascara and you’re ready!

Holiday Shimmer Eye Tutorial

Don’t let the seven step process of this eye tutorial scare you away! It’s just a little bit of layering with some gorgeous colors; ending with eyeliner and mascara. We can handle that, am I right?

The best way to get this look is to use an eyeshadow palette with complimenting colors. Here are a few I found that would work perfectly:

Rose Gold Eye Makeup and a Red/Pink Matte Lip

In this video tutorial, she shares several makeup techniques, but the gist of it is the gorgeous eye makeup tutorial with the rose gold eye makeup and the red/pink matte lips. When you’re headed to a Holiday party, this is your chance to step it up a notch! Adding some rose gold elements to your eyes is a fun way to do just that.

For her eyes, she’s using the Natasha Denona Star Eyeshadow Palette, which is…wait for it…$169 at Sephora. Eeek! If you’d like something a little less expensive, buy Wet n Wild Color Icon Eyeshadow Collection 738 Comfort Zone shadow palette and the Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Eye Shadow Palette. Cost? $48 total.

For her red/pink matte lips, she uses Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick – The Queen which is $32.

Nude Smokey Eye How-To

Have you seen Cover Girl’s Eye Shadow Quads in store and online? I have and I’ve been tempted to try them, because as I said above, I have had dismal luck with the smokey eye look. But they make it look so easy and their quads have all you need to achieve the look!

I’m definitely tempted to try this Notice Me Nudes Palette and follow their step by step process.

Holiday Party Makeup + Outfit Ideas

Ingrid Nilsen is just the cutest and I love her simple, yet festive makeup idea in this video tutorial. Personally, I would skip the winged liner and go for the simple lined eyes, but the rest of it is beautiful. I also love her outfit ideas. The white sweater, black pants and red heels are such a classic!

I hope these tutorials have given you some Holiday makeup inspiration! If you have any favorite tutorials or products, please share in the comments below. Happy Holidays!
