3 Ways Your High School Graduate Can Affordably Further Their Education

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Fender for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned after raising three kids, two of which are adults now, it’s that they are all completely different individuals and should be treated as such.

Our daughter has been on the college path since I can remember. She also enjoyed group activities and sports like volleyball and band. Fast forward to college and she’s an officer in a club on campus.

Her future was fairly laid out in her head and the only decision she needed to make upon graduating from high school was what college she would attend. She is thriving in a college atmosphere and I am so proud of her.

Our middle son’s path has been completely different. It was sometime during his junior year that he first mentioned possibly not attending college. And honestly, at first, that freaked me out a little. Not attend college?! How will he get a job? Who will hire him? What will he do with his time? These are all the thoughts that entered my mind.

Well, he graduated this past year and didn’t attend college. In fact, he’s on the road with us traveling full-time for at least the next year and he’s doing great. Not only has he found a few ways to further his education, but he’s found something he possibly wants to do as a career, plus a hobby he loves and is enjoying dedicating some of his time to it.

And yes, I am extremely proud of him. He’s chosen the path less traveled. (Or at least it feels less traveled to him.) A path that’s a little bit scary. But it’s his path and one that works for his personality, dreams, and desires.

Do you have a child like this? If so, here are three ways my son is furthering his education, all while traveling full-time. Some of these just might interest your child (or yourself!) as well.

3 Ways Your High School Graduate Can Affordably Further Their Education

Learning to Play with Guitar

At the beginning of August, I shared how my son was learning to play the guitar using Fender’s new platform Fender Play. You can read a more in depth look at the platform in my previous post.

The gist of it is it’s an online learning platform created by experts and a leading guitar company, Fender. They know a thing or two about what it takes to learn how to play guitar and how their platform is built has been proof of that.

The curriculum is based on breaking down the basics first, but with using songs that fit your preference and musical taste. That has been key in keeping my son interested and motivated to keep learning. He’s on the folk path and has really enjoyed learning to play songs from artists he connects with.

He’s spent the past month really nailing down the basics and has gained so much confidence. Those riffs and songs that seemed really intimidating in the beginning, now he knows he can learn them with some more practice.

Here’s where’s he’s at progress wise on the platform. He’s not as far along as he’d like, but he’s worlds ahead of where he was after a month of trying to learn on his own, without a platform to guide him.

Fender Play is set up so when you log on, either on your computer or with their app, you can see where you are in your guitar learning journey. You’ll see things like what chords you’ve learned, as well as riffs and songs. It’s really well put together and easy to understand.

How is this furthering his education some might ask? Kids who learn guitar become more confident and also develop coordination and math skills.

There is study after study of the benefits of learning an instrument both as a child and as an adult. After reading several articles, it made me realize how much I could actually benefit from digging into Fender Play and learning a thing or two.

Free Online College Courses

Just because my son decided not to attend college after high school, didn’t mean in any shape or form that he wasn’t interested in continuing to learn. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.

The last few weeks, I’ve seen him dig into topics that interest him like never before. And he’s using free/affordable resources.

Have you ever heard of edX? It was founded in 2012 by Harvard University and MIT with a “mission to provide quality education to everyone around the world.” It’s a MOOC; which stands for massive open online courses.

My son signed up for their Harvard Computer Science course and paid $90 to receive a certificate of completion. It’s an intense course with 10 to 20 hours of homework a week and he’s absolutely loving it.

There’s everything from a course in Science & Cooking to Justice. It’s definitely worth taking a look at if your child is interested in furthering their education.

Attend Lectures

Some colleges will allow you to sit in on their lectures for free. Just make sure you check with the college on their policies before popping into a class. Some campuses require you to audit the class, which means you might have to pay a fee. It’s wise to do your research first!

Colleges aren’t the only place you can attend a lecture and soak in some knowledge. Bookstores, museums and churches host lectures ranging in topics from photography to business ethics.

Simply do a search on either eventful.com or Google ‘your city + free lectures’.

Do you know of other ways kids can further their education for free or almost free? I’d love to hear more creative ways our kids can learn outside of a college environment, so please share!

Have you ever attended a football game and been downright uncomfortable? Maybe you were too cold or too hot. Maybe you wore the worst.pair.of.shoes.ever, which made you stumble a few times walking up the stands to your seat. (Yep, been there.)

I don’t know about you, but if I’m going to be sitting outside cheering my team on, yes I want to look good. (Obviously.) But, I also want to wear something I feel good in. Most likely you’ll be sitting, standing, jumping, walking, cheering, hugging at some point. Possibly all at the same time.

So here are a few outfit ideas that are super cute, yet practical for a night of football watching.

10 Fall Cocktails to Whip Up on a Cool, Crisp Evening

Grab your sweater, maybe a blanket and get ready to sip on one of these ten fall cocktails. These are perfect to slowly sip on a cool, crisp fall evening.

Grab your sweater, maybe a blanket and get ready to sip on one of these ten fall cocktails. These are perfect to slowly sip on a cool, crisp fall evening.

I have a hard time believing there’s anything better than fall. Except for fall-themed everything! The decorations, the makeup, the clothes, and even the drinks. From apple cider mimosas to ginger beer and whiskey, there’s a fall themed drink for everyone.

Here are 10 fall themed cocktails you can whip up this season.

10 Fall Cocktails

1) Kahlua Pumpkin Scotchie

This delicious drink is made with pumpkin spice Kahlua and butterscotch schnapps, a match made in heaven. Mix it with heavy cream and you have a perfect fall cocktail! Sprinkle some pumpkin spice on top for extra fall feels.

2) Spiced Cider Margarita

Margarita fan? This one’s for you. This drink has a mix of tequila, spiced apple cider, and Grand Marnier, an orange flavored liqueur. Intense, right? Rim the glass with raw sugar and cinnamon for a boost of fall flavor. Also, garnish with cinnamon sticks and apple slices for a picture perfect fall drink.

3) Apple Cider Mimosas

I’m convinced apple cider and champagne were made to be together. This drink only needs two ingredients, and if you want, you can decorate the rim with gold and silver sprinkles. Enjoy by yourself or with a group of girlfriends. Party!

4) Espresso Martini

I always think of fall when I have a big cup of coffee in front of me, and this cocktail is perfect for a night by the campfire. Grey Goose vodka, espresso, and premium coffee liqueur come together to create this yummy drink, and you can even garnish it with salted dark chocolate powder!

5) Whiskey Peach Smash

Who says peach can’t be a fall flavor? Mix half a peach, fresh mint leaves, a lemon wedge, simple syrup and whiskey to make this delicious drink come to life. It’s the best of summer and fall, all rolled into one delicious cocktail

6) Orange Cinnamon Blossom Wine

You didn’t think I forgot wine, did you? This mix of orange, cinnamon, honey, sugar, and cloves is another best of both worlds drink. The orange and cinnamon complement each other so well, and you can practically taste fall with the cinnamon and cloves added in. It can be served in heat-resistant cups or wine glasses.

7) Thyme Will Tell

Thyme Will Tell (see what they did there?) is a mix of bourbon, maple syrup, lemon, and of course, thyme! It’s fresh and smoky flavors balance and blend perfectly. Since the whole thing is poured in muddled thyme, the flavor is all there instead of just a hint. I think I’d try this drink just for the pun alone.

8) Caramel Apple Mule

If fall doesn’t have caramel apples, it’s not fall. Plain and simple. This cocktail brings together Absolut vodka, caramel syrup, and apple cider, and I can’t think of anything more delicious, to be honest. Top with ginger beer and garnish with a thin apple slice.

9) Cranberry Ginger Mule

How could I forget cranberry? This drink mixes fruity cranberry, zesty lime and crisp ginger beer for a balanced and delicious cocktail. Garnish each drink with fresh lime wedges, cranberry skewers, or a bit of rosemary to add another flavor to the mix.

10) Adam’s Apple Cocktail

This is a simple, crisp cocktail which requires no mixing or fancy work. It only has three ingredients and can easily be dressed up with an apple slice and a sprig of thyme.

Are you ready to whip up a fall cocktail for yourself or your guests? Fall is the perfect time of the year to practice your cocktail making skills. Have fun and cheers!

Grab your sweater, maybe a blanket and get ready to sip on one of these ten fall cocktails. These are perfect to slowly sip on a cool, crisp fall evening.

Try One of These 6 Beauty Tricks to Make Your Face Look Thinner

Get the scoop on the easiest ways to make your face look thinner!

Get the scoop on the easiest ways to make your face look thinner! Whether you've gained a little weight in your face or you just have a naturally round face shape, there are quite a few ways to make to slim your face.

Whether you’ve gained a little weight and it’s showing in your face, or you just have a naturally round face shape, there are quite a few tricks you can have up your sleeve to make your face look thinner. So, rather than completely stressing over it or considering something drastic, here are six hair and makeup tips that can easily make your face look thinner.

Try One of These 6 Beauty Tricks to Make Your Face Look Thinner

Hair

1) Ombre or lowlights

One of the best ways to make your face appear thinner is to dye your hair an ombre or get lowlights. The color difference creates depth and gives the face a slimmer look.

Bonus: it’s a low-key hairstyle and the roots are dark, so you won’t have to go every few weeks to get it refreshed. Go for a dark brunette to light blonde ombre or ask your stylist for lowlights the next time you take a trip to the salon.

Check out this page titled ‘Everything You Need to Know About Medium Length Hairstyles‘ for some fabulous ideas on hair color.

2) Add volume to the crown

Adding volume to the top, or the crown, of your hair, is another easy way to make your face look thinner.

Just tease your hair at the crown using a wide tooth comb. Not too hard, though! Just a light tease will do the trick just fine. Keep the rest of your hair sleek and smooth for a gorgeous and slimming hairstyle.

Also try a low bun, putting your hair in a mid-height ponytail, or adding long layers.

Do you have thin hair? Read ‘11+ of the Best Tips to Give Your Thin Hair Volume‘.

3) Parting your hair

Parting your hair to the opposite side creates a slimming effect on the face, especially if the hair has a lot of volume and wave. Just part your hair to the opposite side of where you normally do, add some texture and volume with a texturizing spray and a 1-inch curling iron and run your hands through it to create an effortless look.

Makeup

4) Contour

Of course, contour makeup is the number one way to make your face look thinner. This stuff can be tricky to master, but once you get the hang of it, it’s a piece of cake.

Get a matte bronzer a few shades darker than your skin tone, and a highlighter a little bit lighter than your face. Apply the contour to your jawline and your cheeks. For the cheeks, make a puckered face and apply the contour from the center of your cheek up toward the ear, and blend. Put the highlight on your cheekbones and middle of the nose, and swipe the contour on the sides of the bridge of your nose for a completed contour look.

Elle Magazine has some excellent tips on how to master contouring.

5) Eyes, eyes, eyes!

This is your excuse to do a dramatic eye. Playing up the eyes and playing down the lips will help create a thinner face shape, so feel free to do whatever you want with your eye makeup. Eyeliner, mascara, eyeshadow, the works. Be sure to keep your lips simple with a bit of color or gloss.

Read ‘How to Make Your Eyes Pop‘ for some tips on making your eyes really stand out.

6) Eyebrows are key

One of the most important things in making your face look slimmer is the eyebrow shape. An arched shape is much better than a rounded shape, so just fill in your natural eyebrows, but draw the arch a bit upwards to create a thinner face shape. Full and arched brows work to balance out the face and make it appear thinner.

My favorite eyebrow product is Covergirl’s Easy Breezy Brows set. It’s perfect for this makeup challenged gal.

A Glimpse Into My Everyday Life On The Road Full-Time

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Ben Bridge Jeweler. All opinions are 100% mine.

Just a little over three months ago, my family and I said goodbye to the suburban lifestyle, packed up our few belongings and hit the road in an RV full-time. We’ve been to Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Canada, Washington, and Oregon. This fall we’re headed to California, New Mexico, and Arizona.

It’s been an incredible few months of seeing places that have been on my bucket list for years.

A Glimpse Into My Everyday Life On The Road Full-Time

Canada was everything I hoped it would be.

Montana will forever have a place in my heart.

Washington is where my husband grew up and I’m getting to see it through his eyes for the first time.

California has always been a favorite of mine and we have some incredible activities and places to see planned while we’re there. I can’t wait to share them with you!

A Glimpse Into My Everyday Life On The Road Full-Time

I’ve had a few people ask me what life on the road full-time is like, so I thought I’d share some of that with you today.

I Cook Outside More Than Inside

A glimpse into my life of full time travelOur RV has an outdoor kitchen with two burners, a sink, and a small refrigerator. When we first started out on our trip, I cooked our meals inside all of the time. But then we realized the benefits of cooking outside more.

It doesn’t heat up our RV. It’s amazing how one little burner can heat up the entire RV, making it hard for our little air conditioner to keep up.

It doesn’t fill our RV with all of the smells from cooking. I cook with onions and garlic quite a bit, so you can just imagine how fast that fills up 200 sq. feet of living space. It’s intense.

I enjoy it more. There’s just something about cooking outside that is so satisfying. Plus, I swear the food taste better. When we’re at campgrounds that allow fires, we like to cook on the open flame. If you know me well, you’re probably saying ‘who are you and what have you done with Julie?

Yes, I Still Try to Look Nice Most Days

A glimpse into my life of full time travelQuite a few of you were really surprised when I announced what we were doing. I was asked questions like ‘But what about all of your clothes and jewelry?‘ and ‘What about showering?‘ and ‘Are you sure you can hack this kind of lifestyle?‘ Great questions!

When we first started out on this journey, I stopped wearing makeup and caring about what I wore. Or, at least I tried to stop caring. I think that lasted a couple of weeks until I realized there’s nothing wrong with waking up everyday, putting on something that makes me feel good, fixing my hair and applying some makeup. Even if I did live in an RV full-time.

If I was camping for a week, you can bet I would have left the makeup, jewelry and nicer clothes back home. But this isn’t a week long camping trip. This is my life. This is where I live.

A lot of my clothes and jewelry are in storage. I brought mostly jeans, shorts, t-shirts, and sweaters with me. I have a few nicer clothes for conferences and events I’ll be attending.

As far as jewelry, I mostly brought pieces that could work for both casual and dressier occasions.

A glimpse into my life of full time travel

For example, the Reflection Disc Necklace I’m wearing in the photo above is from Ben Bridge Jeweler. It looks great with a casual shirt and jeans and could easily transition over to a dressier outfit. I have an LBD I can’t wait to wear it with.

The ring I’m wearing is also from Ben Bridge and not only is it my birthstone, but it’s small enough to wear every day. It’s their Peridot Baguette Ring and I love it so much. Ben Bridge jewelry is made to withstand the trials of everyday life, even if your everyday life is far from the norm like mine.

So yes, I have way fewer clothes than I used to and my style is more casual these days, but I still try to look nice. Adding little touches like beautiful jewelry and makeup helps me feel more put together.

Our RV has a shower, so yes I shower. 🙂

And so far, I’m able to hack this type of lifestyle. In fact, I’m in love with this type of lifestyle!

I Spend More Time Outdoors

A glimpse into my life of full time travelA few months ago, the only time I really went outside was to walk from the house to the car and from the car to the building and from the car to the house. You get the idea. I wasn’t spending any real time outdoors.

Now, I’m outside all the time, except when I’m working.

Most campgrounds have outdoor activities like tennis, horseshoes, or bike/hiking trails. We’re also in a new city every week, so we’re outside exploring what it has to offer.

A glimpse into my life of full time travel

I end every day with some time outside sipping on a glass of wine or tea and either chatting with family or alone soaking up the silence. It’s a huge difference from the way I used to live my life.

So there you have it. A very small glimpse into what life on the road full-time is like. I’m also working on a post sharing how this lifestyle has changed me so far and a few travel related posts about places we’ve seen. I have so much more to tell you and of course, always love your questions, so ask away!

Inside: Get some inspiration for what to wear this month with these 15 September Outfit Ideas.

Get some inspiration for what to wear this month with these 15 September Outfit Ideas.Quite awhile ago, I retired my cute outfit ideas series. It wasn’t conveying the message I wanted to share with you and ‘cute’ just wasn’t the right word anymore.

What you’ve told me you want are fresh outfit ideas every month that aren’t necessarily ‘cute’ but instead doable and age appropriate. You’ve told me you don’t want to look like your teen daughter and you don’t want to look like a granny.

You want to dress for you.

You want to dress stylishly.

You want to dress with confidence.

I’m here to help you do just that.

So, each month sometime in the first week, I’ll post outfit ideas just for that month. The series will be titled ‘What to Wear This Month’ and I’ll share fifteen outfits. That gives you outfit ideas for half of the month. I hope you’ll find this series valuable!

And as always, if there’s something you would like me to add to the series or another topic you’d like me to cover, send me a quick email at julie at momfabulous.com.

Alright, let’s do this!

For even more fall outfit ideas, check out these related posts on Mom Fabulous:

What to Wear This Month: 15 September Outfit Ideas

September is a tricky month to dress for no matter where you live. In some states, it’s still summer temperatures while in other states it’s getting cold in the evenings. September is the month to layer, which is one of my favorite fashion topics to talk about!

My favorite layering pieces are scarves, boyfriend cardigans, ponchos and utility jackets.

Most of these outfits are casual and feature jeans. I’m working on creating some fall outfit ideas for work and will post those soon.

Fall Outfit Ideas with Scarves

Outfit Idea: Pair a chambray shirt with black denim, ballet flats, and a scarf

You can’t go wrong with a classic striped shirt! Pair one with an olive green scarf, flare jeans and wedges for a 70s vibe. Or, pair the shirt and scarf with skinny jeans and ankle boots.

Olive is such a great color for September. Pair an olive dress with a scarf and strappy ankle boots for a stylish way to transition into the new season easily.

Whether you’re in the stands or on the sideline, fall usually means attending sporting events. Combine sporty and fashionable with a baseball style tee, scarf, distressed denim and ankle boots.

With September still being a little on the warm side, you can still wear sleeveless shirts and camis. Just throw a blazer over the top of it and finish it off with a pretty scarf. And how great are these two colors together: navy and burgundy? If the heels are a little too much for you, switch them out for ballet flats.

Bonus: How to tie a blanket scarf

How to tie a blanket scarf

Cardigan Outfits for Fall

Cute outfit ideas of the week - pair a long cardigan with your favorite t-shirt dress and sandals for a comfy and cute spring look.

In most places, you can still wear dresses in September because the temperatures are fairly mild. One of my favorite outfits to wear is a t-shirt dress with a cardigan and either sandals, ballet flats or ankle boots.

Cute outfit ideas of the week featuring long cardigan outfit ideas. Pair a long cardigan with a striped tunic and leggings.

If you enjoy wearing leggings, September is the perfect time to break them out. Wear them with a striped tee and a long cardigan + add some cute flats for a comfortable and stylish look.

Colorblock Cardigan Outfit

A casual and simple boyfriend cardigan outfit. Pair a red and black flannel with a neutral cardigan, jeans and booties for a great fall look.

A casual boyfriend cardigan outfit

Poncho Outfit Ideas

A poncho is a fun way to dress up a white t-shirt and jeans. Plus, it’s great for layering. Add a pair of ankle boots and a fall colored handbag for an outfit that just might become a go-to for you.

White jeans in the fall? Yep! Add a gray poncho or one in a fall color like burgundy, ankle boots and an patterned handbag for a pretty fall outfit.

Frame Your Fall Look - The boho trend is big this year when it comes to fall fashion. Here are a couple of fun looks incorporating boho style and a favorite accessory - glasses!

Bringing Boho Fashion Into Your Everyday Look

Utility Jacket Outfit Ideas

Break out those boyfriend jeans and pair them with a white shirt, utility jacket, and open toe ankle boots. Add a handbag in red for a pop of color.

Throw your utility jacket over a black and white plaid shirt, paired with raw hem jeans and white Converse for a look perfect for the weekend.

Break out those white jeans and pair it with your favorite chambray shirt and either a utility jacket or vest
