5 Tips for Taking Amazing Vacation Photos with Your iPhone 7 Plus

Do you have an upcoming vacation planned and want to make sure you have the know-how to take amazing iPhone photos to capture the memories? Here are 5 tips to help you document your trip with incredible photos taken with only your iPhone. If I can do this, so can you.

Do you have an upcoming vacation planned and want to make sure you have the know-how to take amazing iPhone photos to capture the memories? Here are 5 tips to help you document your trip with incredible photos taken with only your iPhone. If I can do this, so can you.

I love photos. I like looking at photos. I like taking photos. But I’m not all that interested in photography. Let me explain.

My son and husband are really into photography. I hear them have conversations about things like ISO, shutter speed and aperture (I had to look that term up), and while they’re talking about these things, they actually sound excited about it. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen a sparkle in their eyes a time or two as they threw out these fascinating (to them) photography terms.

I kind of tune them out (no offense) because, honestly, I just want to see the nice finished product.

Now don’t get me wrong, I want to be able to capture all those memories while on vacation. Sometimes I see something or catch a moment that deserves to be documented and I can’t wait around for someone else to take the photo for me. But if I have to worry about buttons and using the right lens and what was that term…oh yeah, aperture…the moment will have passed and my dreams of having that perfect memory preserved forever will be utterly crushed.

The iPhone 7 Plus Camera

I’ll never forget the day my son received his iPhone 7 Plus in the mail. He was explaining to me all of the features of the camera and I was blown away. Between the built-in telephoto lens which takes high-quality zoomed-in photos and the portrait mode which blurs out the background making your subject stand out, I knew I eventually needed this phone. No, I wanted this phone.

I’ll leave the DSLR cameras to the pros because the iPhone 7 Plus is all I need to take the kinds of amazing photos I want.

So if you also enjoy capturing those vacation memories and priceless moments, but you want to do it without lugging a big camera around, keep reading for some tips on how to do just that. You really can take pictures you’ll be proud of.

5 Tips for Taking Amazing Vacation Photos with Your iPhone 7 Plus

1. Know Your Destination

If you’re traveling to a place you’ve never been, it’s a good idea to do a little bit of research in order to discover the most photo-worthy places.

For example, before we went to San Francisco our son researched the best places to take pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge. So before we even got there, we knew we needed to find Baker Beach. Unfortunately, we ended up on the side where, um, clothing was optional, which meant we had to get a little creative in the angles we shot from (with some post-shoot cropping mixed in). If you know what I mean.

So, research your destination and track down the best places for the best shots. You’ll thank yourself later when you can Instagram and Facebook those incredible photos until your heart’s content.

2. Experiment, Experiment, Experiment

Experimenting with different shots is really fun with the iPhone 7 Plus because of the two lenses. The first lens is what you want for capturing a wide view, like photos of iconic bridges and buildings. The second lens is a 2x telephoto lens, which allows you to zoom in on a subject without losing quality.

Picture taken with the iPhone 7 Plus wide angle lens

So when you’re taking photos on vacation, experiment with the different lens abilities. Go for the wider shots, but also zoom in and grab some detail from your surroundings. Those small details that often go unnoticed can turn into some truly incredible photos.

3. Have Fun with Portrait Mode

I’m pretty blown away by what the Portrait mode on the iPhone 7 Plus is capable of. I’m also blown away by how easy it is to use. My 13-year-old son took this photo of his meal the other night.

Picture taken with portrait mode on the iPhone 7 Plus

Just think of all the incredible pictures you can take on vacation with this! From photos of your food to incredible portrait shots of your kids, the ideas and possibilities are endless.

The best way to learn how to use this feature to its full extent is to practice. We have found that your subject needs to be fairly close to you and it turns out best if the background is farther away. The larger the space between your subject and the background, the more pronounced the blur effect will be.

We also found out that lighting is very important. Most of our indoor photos with artificial lighting didn’t turn out well. But the photos outside or with lots of natural light turned out fantastic.

How to use portrait mode on the iPhone 7 Plus

To use the portrait mode, just open your camera and swipe left once in the rotating menu at the bottom.

4. Use the Burst Mode

Some of my favorite action shots happened because of the burst mode on the iPhone. So while your kids are splashing around in the ocean or sliding down a pristine snow-covered hill, start clicking away on burst mode. Getting those picture perfect moments is sometimes about looking ahead and knowing when a great moment might happen. Burst mode lets you capture those moments.

To use burst mode, just hold down the shutter button while in the camera screen.

5. Take As Many Photos As Possible

When it comes to taking travel photos, there is definitely no such thing as too many photos! Snap away as much as you can, while still leaving time to enjoy your trip and all of the moments. The great thing about using your iPhone to take your vacation photos is it’s just faster and easier. There’s no messing with heavy equipment or too many buttons. It’s all about simplicity, freeing you up to actually be in the moments and appreciate them.

Remember, not all of your pictures will turn out great. But the more photos you take, the more potential there is for some absolutely amazing vacation photos.

Traveling with an iPhone 7 Plus is just fun…almost as much fun as looking at all of the photos later that you have captured. I hope these tips inspire you and help you to capture the magic of your vacation so you have many wonderful memories to look back on.

5 Steps to Starting Your Side Business + A Giveaway!

This is a guest post by Christy Wright from Business Boutique, a new book that guides women down the path of making money doing what they love. Keep reading until the end for a giveaway!

Business Boutique by Christy Wright

With over 30 million Americans working as independent workers or “solopreneurs,” not to mention the endless free social media and selling platforms, there’s never been a better time or bigger audience to launch your own side gig.

Maybe you’ve always had a knack for repainting old thrift store furniture. Or maybe you’re a gifted musician who could coach other young aspiring talent. Maybe you have a specific education, training, experience or skill that you could develop into a freelance business such as financial planning or graphic design. Whatever your “thing” may be, there are plenty of good reasons to get going.

With over 30 million Americans working as independent workers or “solopreneurs,” not to mention the endless free social media and selling platforms, there’s never been a better time or bigger audience to launch your own side gig.

First, you can make extra money on the side. Extra money is always a good thing! Second, you can set your own schedule. That way you can build your business around your life versus the other way around. Also a good thing!

And finally, you get to utilize something you’re good at and enjoy. Also a good—and fulfilling—thing!

Regardless of where you are now, 2017 can be the year that you get started!

5 Steps to Starting Your Side Business

But, of course, getting started is the hardest part! I coach women with side businesses through my Business Boutique events all over the country, and I know how difficult and overwhelming it can seem. So to help, here are the first five steps you can take to jump-start your side business.

Find community.

Just because you’re doing it on your own doesn’t mean you have to do it alone. Find other people who can help support your dream, provide resources or connections that may help you, or give you advice when you need it.

Create a plan.

It doesn’t have to be fancy or fourteen pages long. You can make your own, search for a template online, or even use my Business Boutique Quick-Start Guide found at ChristyWright.com. It doesn’t matter how you do it; it just matters that you do it!

Be prepared to get scared.

Fear is just a part of the journey, and if you know that going in, you can set yourself up to overcome it. Putting yourself out there can feel vulnerable and scary, but you can’t succeed unless you do it! I write on this topic frequently because I battle fear just like you do.

Just take the first step.

Business can be overwhelming with all that you have to do, especially when you’re starting out. But don’t focus on all that you have to do. Just focus on one thing that you have to do. When you take that one baby step, it fuels your focus and gives you the confidence and momentum to take that second baby step.

Do it now.

If you wait until you’re ready, until you have more experience, or until all the details are perfect before you go for it, you’ll never do anything. Go for it now—when you’re not ready, you don’t have experience, it’s not perfect, and you’re scared out of your mind. Do it anyway. Do it scared. Ready is a myth.

There you go! These are the first five things you need to do to get started. And notice not one of them was “go buy a bunch of equipment and materials” or “pay $10,000 for a professional website.” Those things aren’t a bad investment later down the line when your business revenues justify it. But when you’re starting out, the problem isn’t the design of your website; it’s your fear, doubt, hesitation, and feeling overwhelmed.

If you do these five things, you’ll be well on your way to joining the movement of people making money doing what they love!

17 Mason Jar Salads for Your Work Week Lunch + How Tos

Do you struggle with what to bring for lunch? Mason jar salads can be prepped ahead of time and stored in your refrigerator. This makes them the perfect work week lunch idea!

Do you struggle with what to bring for lunch? Mason jar salads can be prepped ahead of time and stored in your refrigerator. This makes them the perfect work week lunch idea!

Do you often skip lunch while at work? Or do you end up just snacking on something unhealthy? Or what about running to the drive through ‘just this one time’? And we all know that ‘one time’ can easily turn into repeats.

If you’re trying to eat healthier, cut down on lunch expenses or both, mason jar salads might be exactly what you’re looking for. And the perfect thing about these is you can add exactly what you like.

Before we get into the recipes I’ve rounded up, let’s go over some of the basics of creating a really good mason jar salad. You don’t just pile everything into the jar and call it good. Nope. There’s a science to it. Or more like an order to it.

Your Perfect Mason Jar Salad Is All About the Order

The basics of a perfect mason jar salad are to layer the heavier ingredients on the bottom and ending with your greens on top. This keeps the greens from getting soggy. The heartier veggies can handle being on the bottom and closer to the dressing.

Okay, here’s the order you want to put the ingredients in:

  1. Salad Dressing: depending on how much salad dressing you like, you’ll put anywhere from 1 to 3 Tablespoons of dressing on the bottom of your mason jar.
  2. Hard Vegetables: These include veggies such as carrots, peppers, red onions, and cucumbers. This layer protects the other ingredients from getting soggy.
  3. Beans, Grains, Pasta & Softer Veggies: Next goes in anything like black beans, pasta, rice, mushrooms, corn, or broccoli.
  4. Cheeses and Proteins: Only add these ingredients next if you’re planning on eating your salad within a day. If you’re prepping for the week, leave both of these ingredients out and top your salad with them after you’ve poured it out into a bowl.
  5. Greens and Nuts: The last layer is your greens, like spinach, kale and lettuce and any nuts you’d like to add.

Now seal it up and you’re good to go! To eat, just shake it up and pour it into a bowl.

What Size Canning Jars Should You Use?

For best results, go with a jar that has a wide mouth. It will make it easier to get the ingredients in the jar, as well as out of the jar. I recommend using a quart size canning jar. These are the perfect size for a lunch or dinner time salad.

Here are several different options:

I’ve never personally tried these, but there are jars designed with a separate compartment just for the dressing:

How Long Do Salads in a Jar Last?

If the lid is sealed tightly and stored in the fridge, Mason Jar Salads can last up to five days. But remember, there are certain ingredients like hard-boiled eggs, cheeses, and proteins that won’t last that long. If you’re new to making mason jar salads, I would recommend starting with just 3 days worth and test the ingredients out for a bit.

How Do You Make a Salad Dressing?

My favorite dressing for this type of salad is your basic vinaigrette. It’s really easy to make:

Mix these ingredients together:

  • 3 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar (or you could use white wine vinegar, apple cider, etc)
  • Pinch of Kosher Salt
  • Dash of Black Pepper

For more dressing recipes and mason jar salad recipes that go above and beyond your basic green salad, Mason  Jar Salads: 50 Layered Lunches to Grab & Go is a fantastic book. Just looking at the cover makes me hungry!

Okay, I think we have the basics down for making delicious mason jar salads! Now for some recipes:

How to Put Together a ‘Fast Clean Up’ Basket for House Showings

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Scrub Daddy. All opinions are 100% mine.

If your house is on the market to sell, or you’ve gone through the process of selling a house before, then you know all too well how important it is to have a fast-action plan for getting it ready for a showing.  If your house is on the market to sell, or you've gone through the process of selling a house before, then you know all too well how important it is to have a fast-action plan for getting it ready for a showing. We recently put our house on the market and I shared some simple tips for getting your house ready to sell. A few of those tips involved deep cleaning, as well as having a fast clean-up basket of supplies always ready for last minute showings.

Here’s how the scenario usually went for us when it came to showings that happened quickly. We would receive a text saying someone was interested in a showing at a particular time. We would then do a quick pick up of any items that were left out, make beds, straighten pillows, wipe down bathrooms and kitchen and vacuum. Since we had done quite a bit of prep to get the house ready to show, getting ready for quick showings was pretty straightforward. Inconvenient at times, yes but also well worth the hassle!

One thing to do to make wiping down the bathrooms and kitchen go faster is to keep a basket of everything you need altogether. That way you’re not rounding up all of the cleaning supplies, cleaning cloths and sponges every single time. And if you have the right kind of supplies on hand, your basket won’t need much in it and clean up will happen in a jiffy.

Your ‘Fast Clean Up’ Basket for House Showings

Here’s what we have in our ‘fast clean up’ basket:

  • All purpose cleaner
  • Toilet bowl cleaner
  • Glass cleaner
  • Rubber gloves
  • Cleaning cloths
  • Sponges

All purpose cleaner – Using a cleaner that can get all the jobs done helps make cleaning go way faster. I use one that doesn’t have a chemical smell but is a nice clean scent. After we’ve used it, the entire house smells incredible.

Toilet bowl cleaner – It’s a good idea to give each toilet a quick clean inside. Just spray, brush and you’re done!

Glass cleaner – You can use a good quality glass cleaner on the mirrors and fixtures, making them shine. Just spray and wipe down with a microfiber cloth that doesn’t leave lint residue.

Rubber Gloves – Protect your hands from germs and cleaning chemicals with a simple pair of gloves. Wearing these will also save your hands from getting dry after being in the water for so long.

Cleaning cloths – I prefer microfiber cloths in different colors. One, they don’t leave any lint residue on fixtures and mirrors. And two, if you have them in different colors, you can differentiate between which ones you used for the toilet, which ones for the sink, etc. You wouldn’t want to wipe down the toilet with one cloth and then head to the next bathroom and accidentally wipe down the sink with the same cloth.

Sponges – This is where your time can be cut in half the most, by having a variety of good quality sponges to get the job done quickly. If your house is on the market to sell, or you've gone through the process of selling a house before, then you know all too well how important it is to have a fast-action plan for getting it ready for a showing. I’ll never forget watching the Shark Tank episode with a product called Scrub Daddy featured. It was one of those products that made you think ‘I have to have that!’ So when they reached out to Mom Fabulous to test out and feature their product, it was a no-brainer.

Here are just a few features of The Original Scrub Daddy that make it a sponge of choice for our household:

  • Food particles don’t stick because of its rinse clean feature
  • It comes in several different colors so you can color-code your cleaning jobs
  • Scrub Daddy’s smile will make you smile, plus it cleans both sides of your utensils (Ingenious!)

If your house is on the market to sell, or you've gone through the process of selling a house before, then you know all too well how important it is to have a fast-action plan for getting it ready for a showing. If your house is on the market to sell, or you've gone through the process of selling a house before, then you know all too well how important it is to have a fast-action plan for getting it ready for a showing. If your house is on the market to sell, or you've gone through the process of selling a house before, then you know all too well how important it is to have a fast-action plan for getting it ready for a showing. Needless to say, The Original Scrub Daddy is one of those products that makes cleaning less of a chore. The scrubbing action is like none other, plus it’s a sponge that will last much longer than your regular every day (non-smiling) sponge. No wonder it’s American’s Favorite Sponge!

Not only do we have The Original Scrub Daddy in several colors in our fast clean up basket, but also another one of their products that have been a huge time saver. I’m talking about Eraser Daddy.  If your house is on the market to sell, or you've gone through the process of selling a house before, then you know all too well how important it is to have a fast-action plan for getting it ready for a showing. Eraser Daddy has a scrubby side and an eraser side. We used the eraser side to get rid of everything from rust stains in our kitchen sink, scuff marks on baseboards and grime and dirt that likes to collect on the sides of the tub. This is just one more ingenious product in their line-up.

Would you like to try Scrub Daddy for yourself? Whether you’re getting your house ready to sell or just need a sponge to help with those daily household tasks, I highly recommend trying out a Scrub Daddy product for yourself. They’re available at All Major Retailers. Be sure to follow the Scrub Daddy Facebook for updates!

Have you ever had to get your house ready to sell and deal with those last minute showings? I’m happy to say we’re out of the showings stage and are officially under contract!

10 Simple Ways to Get Your House Ready to Sell

Are you looking for simple ways to get your house ready to sell? Here are a few things we did that I believe made a difference in how potential buyers saw and felt about our home.

Are you looking for simple ways to get your house ready to sell? Here are a few things we did that I believe made a difference in how potential buyers saw and felt about our home.

The last couple of months has been all about getting our house ready to sell. We put it on the market at the end of March and if all goes well, we’ll close in early May. We live in a hot market right now and houses are going fast, but I believe we also did some key things to get it ready, which brought in offers the first day and around 20 showings total. Needless to say, I’m very happy to be out of the ‘showings’ phase!

If you’ve ever sold a house or worked in real estate, then you know how much work getting a house ready to sell is. It might be a lot of work, but the payoff is well worth it.

10 Simple Ways to Get Your House Ready to Sell

1. Declutter the entire house from top to bottom

It’s almost impossible to clean what needs to be cleaned and really show off what your house has to offer with clutter in the way. It distracts the eye from your home’s best features, as well as makes cleaning harder on yourself. So the first thing we did was a major declutter.

If your home is very cluttered and this step overwhelms you, the easiest way to go about this is step by step. Knowing how to sort through the clutter and what process to follow will help you with the overwhelm.

We took many trips to a donation drop-off center, had a garage sale and also boxed up anything we wanted to keep but didn’t want to be displayed.

2. Get the floors in tip top shape

Floors are a really big deal to home buyers and you want them to look as best as possible. That can mean anything from replacing carpets to getting them professionally cleaned. We ended up replacing the carpet downstairs and giving the carpets upstairs a deep clean. Our tile in the kitchen and bathrooms were given a good scrubbing.

The simplest way to get your floors ready is to hire someone else to do it. We’ve done this before and it was money well spent.

3. Touch up the paint

Our house is only four years old, so the paint is in good condition. If you’ve painted your house in the last few years or your house is fairly new, most likely the paint will only need touch ups. We were able to get an exact match of the interior paint and after going over scuff marks and everyday wear and tear,  the walls looked great. Be sure to check all doors and exterior paint as well.

4. Freshen up the yard

Your yard is the first impression when potential buyers drive up for a showing or are casually driving through a neighborhood looking at houses for sale. The simplest ways to get it looking good are to mow and weed eat, lay down any fresh mulch and add some color with fresh flowers in pots.

5. Clear off surfaces

Clearing off the clutter on the kitchen counters, bathroom sinks, dressers, and desks made such a difference in the way our house looked. I loved it so much it made me wish we had done this sooner for ourselves to enjoy! I noticed that our kitchen and bathrooms looked so much bigger and brighter after doing this one simple task.

Are you looking for simple ways to get your house ready to sell? Here are a few things we did that I believe made a difference in how potential buyers saw and felt about our home.

6. Add small staging elements

The real estate company we used included someone to stage our house for us, which was really nice. She helped us change up the flow of the furniture in the living room and master bedroom, to make it a little more inviting to potential buyers. She also brought in more lamps for maximum lighting and a few decorative items that pulled from the colors I already decorated with. We also added some homey touches like bright yellow lemons and a ‘Welcome Home’ sign on our chalkboard.

To do this yourself, look at your home through the eyes of a buyer. What are your home’s best features? What made you purchase the house in the first place? Highlight these features in the best way possible so they really wow visitors.

Another tip is to flip through home decor magazines, as well as scroll through other house listings to see what staging elements they have.

7. Put out fresh, clean linens

The last thing you want is to leave dirty towels out. Some show dirt easily and often has a musty odor if they’ve been used and hanging for awhile. We set aside brand new towels to display for showings in the bathrooms and kitchen. You could always go with bright white towels or if your bathroom lacks excitement, add some towels with a nice punch of color.

8. Cleared the floors in closets

It’s amazing how much bigger our closets looked after we removed items from the floor. We mainly did this in the pantry and linen closets.

9. Keep the dishes clean

This was probably one of the hardest things to keep up with. It’s amazing how fast dishes can stack up. Fast enough to make me want to eat out every day, but since that wasn’t happening, we used as little dishes as possible. We also hand washed and dried small loads so we could immediately put them away.

10. Wipe down counters and mirrors daily

This not only helped our home always smell fresh, but it made less work for us to do when we had a quick showing and had to leave. After we cleaned the kitchen, we would wipe down all of the counters, appliances and dining room table. We did the same thing in the bathrooms after getting ready in the morning.

Going through the process of selling and showing a house can definitely be stressful. But through it all, we kept reminding ourselves (and our kids) what the big picture was: getting the house sold! I believe these short-term inconveniences were well worth it in the end.

Why a Probiotic is Part of My Beauty Routine

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Renew Life. All opinions are 100% mine.

Should a probiotic be a part of an everyday beauty routine? I believe it should and here’s why.

I post a lot of beauty related articles here on Mom Fabulous, from my experience with the 10-step Korean skin care routine and why I think double cleansing is the way to go, to some of my favorite anti-aging products that really work.

While I believe those things are important (and fun…because 10 steps is a tad bit crazy, am I right?), I don’t talk enough about how what’s happening inside your body affects what you see on the outside. But it definitely does and I’ve experienced this first-hand in the last few weeks. At the end of March, I shared some ways we can be proactive about the way we feel inside and out. (You can read it here.) I talked about how I sometimes complain about the way I feel, but I don’t take matters into my own hands and do what is necessary to help myself feel better.

There are days I feel so incredibly tired, but I’m not making sure I get enough sleep at night or exercise the next day.

There are days my stomach hurts, but I continue to fill it with junk.

There are days I just don’t feel good overall, but I continue the same bad habits day in and day out.

Can you relate?

I finally reached an ‘enough is enough!’ state and have been taking better care of myself. I’ve been drinking more water, getting a good amount of sleep and eating healthier. I definitely have noticed a difference and that’s amazing.

One thing I shared that I was going to start doing, was living digestively and taking a probiotic. I had heard about probiotics and kept thinking ‘Hmmm…I should try those someday’ but I never did.

Until now. I teamed up with RenewLife and picked up their Ultimate Flora Extra Care Daily Probiotic product at Target. I’ve been taking it for a month and I am very happy with the results. Before I get into those, here are a few details about the product in case you’re interested in trying it for yourself:

So, what changes have I noticed? Enough to add this product to my daily beauty routine!

Why a Probiotic is Part of My Beauty Routine

There are two big changes I’ve experienced within two weeks of taking Ultimate Flora Extra Care Daily Probiotic – clearer glowing skin and less bloating.

Let’s start with my skin…

I didn’t notice the difference in my skin until I was looking at some pictures of myself that my husband had taken. And that’s when I noticed it. I was…glowing. I haven’t changed anything in my beauty routine. I haven’t changed any makeup I’m using. The only thing I’ve been doing differently is taking a probiotic. I remembered reading an article about why we should take probiotics and one of the reasons they gave was clear, glowing skin. I’m proof it makes a difference!

Now, about that bloating…

This is not a topic I really like to discuss publicly. I mean who would right? But, after having discussions with several friends and family members, this is an issue for so.many.women. Especially those of us in our 40s and beyond. Why? I have no idea! But I do know that since taking a probiotic, my jeans fit better and I overall feel better. And that is a beautiful thing. 😉

After posting about the fact I was starting to use a probiotic, someone on Twitter contacted me and asked: “Is this another dang laxative commercial?” Um, first no it’s not and secondly, we’re no longer social media friends. (He started getting really rude so I said bye bye!)

This isn’t a laxative my friends. That’s something that’s a quick fix, take-it-once-and-you-might-feel-better, kind of situation. A probiotic is about supporting your digestive system and immune health and restoring some balance so you can feel like a better version of you.

If you’d like to try it for yourself, you can Save $3 with this coupon. I encourage you to try Probiotic, digestive health and see if it makes a difference. Should a probiotic be a part of an everyday beauty routine? I believe it should and here's why.
