Let me be real honest with you for a minute here. I am usually ecstatic and very ready for summer to be over and the school year to begin. Between the Texas heat and trying to juggle work, kids and home; come August I am absolutely exhausted. I’m ready for a fresh start and more structured days, plus the possibility of slightly cooler weather. But this year is completely different. It’s as if I’m mourning the end of summer and dragging my feet on all of the things that need to be done.
Why you ask? Because starting on August 22nd I will have a freshman in college, a senior in high school and a 7th grader. My daughter Hannah is an adult and starting a huge new season in her life. My middle son Josiah is going into his last year of school, which will involve him juggling work, school and a social life for the first time. And if I learned anything from my daughter’s senior year, it’s that it flies by and is extremely busy for both the student and parents. Plus my youngest, Aaron, is growing up so incredibly fast and is entering into the social media and texting phase of life for the first time; which I’m just not ready for.
So these last few weeks of summer not only need to be spent wisely as far as getting prepared for the new school year, but also spent with some breathing time to enjoy as a family; because life is about to get a lot different for us. (And spent laughing at my hilarious jokes. As you can see from the picture above, Aaron appreciates my humor. Or not.)
Since we went on such a big trip over spring break, we decided to not go anywhere this summer and instead enjoy what our city has to offer. We’ll get away to the beach for a few days, but overall travel has been light. I asked my kids at the beginning of the summer what they wanted to do in the area and some of the ideas were paddle boarding, visiting a couple of water parks and one very specific request from my youngest – to hover board in the city.
Wish granted. My husband and I took him to the capital building in Austin and he was able to hover board all over the place. Needless to say, it was a good day. He was also able to test out his new pair of Men’s Nike Lunarstelos Running Shoe he got from Famous Footwear. Red shoes and a red hover board – what else could he need?
Since Aaron has to wear a uniform to school, shoes to him are extremely important. It’s his chance to express himself at school and helps him feel confident.
How do you embrace the last few weeks of summer? Do you feel like doing a little (internal) back flip when school is finally about to start?
Or are you dragging your feet a little like I am? Whatever you might be feeling, I hope these last few weeks are enjoyable. On a side note: come August 21st when we move my daughter into the dorms, I’m going to need all the positive vibes from you I can get. Plus tissues…please send tissues.
