How to Keep Hair Fresh Between Washes

Whether you are out camping in the woods, traveling, or just plain busy, finding the time every day to wash your hair can be hard. Sometimes there isn’t enough time in the day for anything other than a quick shower. Plus: shampooing your hair every day can actually be bad for it, contrary to popular belief. If your hair is dyed, washing it every day can also gradually strip away color.

When you’re busy or you just need to give your hair a break from all of the washing, conditioning, and styling, there are plenty of ways to keep your hair looking fresh, as if you just washed it.

How to Keep Your Hair Fresh Between Washes: When you're busy or you just need to give your hair a break from all of the washing, conditioning, and styling, there are plenty of ways to keep your hair looking fresh, as if you just washed it.

How to Keep Hair Fresh Between Washes

1) Start in the Shower

Start at the source. Make sure you are properly washing your hair to avoid frizzy, greasy hair later on. Be sure to only put conditioner on the ends of your hair, and don’t shampoo every day. That can actually strip the natural oils out of your hair, making it prone to frizz and breakage.

Invest in a good shower cap you can use in the shower on your non-wash days so hair isn’t exposed to moisture.

Also, rinse your hair with cold water. It helps lock in hair’s natural moisture while hot water strips it away.

2) Dry Shampoo to the Rescue

I don’t know about you, but I am 50% dry shampoo by the end of the week. It really does work to keep hair from getting greasy, but be sure to invest in a good one and spray it at the roots and fluff them. This adds more volume to the roots and hair overall.

Here are some good drugstore dry shampoos:

3) Be Careful With Styling Products

If your hair is frizzy or dry, it’s tempting to use a serum or oil after getting out of the shower to keep it shiny and pretty. But this can actually make hair look greasier, totally counteracting that.

Try using products without heavy oils, like a styling cream or a leave in conditioner spray. I use It’s A 10 Leave In Conditioner and it’s absolutely wonderful.

4) No Touchy!

This is a sneaky culprit of greasy hair and can be a hard habit to break. If you’re constantly touching your hair, the oils from your hands will rub off gradually and hair will be even dirtier. If you have a habit of touching your hair, try putting it up in a bun or high ponytail, or just find something else to do with your hands when you’re tempted to touch it.

5) Try A Hair Mist

If you’ve gone three or four days without washing your hair and it doesn’t exactly smell pleasant, try a hair mist. They keep your hair smelling nice without an overpowering scent, and there are even some that provide shine and moisture while also smelling good. Multitasking for the win.

 Enjoy your fresh, healthy hair!
