7 Products That Make Dorm Life Easier

Inside: Are you looking for dorm room ideas? Not only is decorating necessary so you create a space you love, but there are a few products to consider buying that make dorm life a bit easier.

If you’re an incoming college student, I’m sure you’ve spent a decent chunk of time researching what you need for your dorm. Or if you’re a parent of a college student, you’ve probably done the same.

Appliances, furniture, décor, the works. Preparing is a lot of fun, but unfortunately, the researching doesn’t give you a full idea of what you need. There are some things you don’t realize you need until you’ve been in your dorm for a while, or things you just didn’t think about.

So here they are:

1) Laundry Pods 

Lots of dorms have laundry facilities in them, and if they don’t, there’s one on campus or a laundromat nearby. The pods are a lot easier than trying to figure out where to pour the detergent in or just flat out making a mess. Do yourself a favor and just grab a bag of detergent pods instead. You can just throw the pod in with your clothes and not worry about messy liquid detergent. 

2) Brita Pitcher 

Plastic water bottles from the vending machine can get expensive (and also they’re bad for the environment. Boo.) Having a water pitcher is an environment-safe alternative that saves you from racking up plastic bottles.

Just fill up the pitcher every night and stick it in the fridge so you have nice cold water every morning. One of my favorite Brita pitchers is their Stream one. It filters as your pour, so you don’t have to wait for filtered water. Instant gratification.

(Bonus tip: drink a TON of water. Your energy level and overall health will benefit, especially during the busy college years.) 

3) Bed Risers 

The space under your bed is the perfect place for additional storage, or for a place to relax that’s all your own. Most dorms have beds that loft, but if yours only goes up a little, grab some bed risers. There’s even a set from Studio 3B on Amazon with additional outlets in them. 

4) Over-the-Door Hanger 

Closet space in dorms is quite limited, so pick up an over-the-door hanger for your heavier jackets, purse, and backpack so you can save closet space for all those cute clothes you bought for your first year of college. The hangers should fit on most doors. 

5) Drawer Dividers 

Several dorms have dressers, which is handy, but those can get to be a huge mess if they aren’t organized properly. Also, folding all of the socks and underwear one by one can be time-consuming. Get some drawer dividers so you have set compartments for all of the things in your dresser. This can save you a lot of time. And lost socks. 

6) Plants 

Yes, that’s right. Plants. Living in a dorm can get gloomy sometimes, so brighten up your space, and give yourself a new hobby, by growing some perennial plants. The green will make your space feel a bit more natural and bright, and give you something to look forward to every day.

Some good perennial flowers include: zinnias, marigolds, and forget-me-nots. You could also opt for succulents which are incredibly easy to care for.

7) Noise Cancelling Headphones 

The chances of being able to study in a dorm are slim to none, especially when you’ve got people banging on doors, running up and down the hallways, and loud phone conversations. Trust me when I say you NEED noise cancelling headphones.

Whether you’re in the safety of the library, or the possible chaos of your dorm, these bad boys will make studying, and possibly sleeping, much easier.
