Brownie Sundae Affogato

It appears I’m on a bit of a Brownie Sundae kick this week don’t you think? First these cupcakes and now the perfect after dinner dessert that I am super excited to share with you. It’s an Affogato recipe. What’s Affogato you might ask? Keep reading…

I was given the chance to check out Gourmesso coffee, which is compatible with Nespresso machines. I am in love with my little red espresso machine and have been experimenting with all kinds of different drinks and recipes. My son works as a barista at a popular coffee house, so we are getting well educated on all things coffee related.

Affogato is Italian for “drowned” and is a popular after meal dessert in Italy. It all started with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or gelato in a cup, and then the ice cream is “drowned” with a shot of espresso. Sounds amazing right? Well, it is. Affogato recipes have evolved quite a bit and people and restaurants have been putting their own spin on it.

Since I’ve been all about the brownie this week, I thought I’d see how a Brownie Sundae Affogato would turn out.

While a shot of espresso is perfect on a cold winter day, a shot poured over a scoop of vanilla ice cream is the perfect warm weather dessert.

Here’s how to make it.

Place brownie pieces in the bottom of a cup. Then add a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.

Brew your shot of espresso and immediately pour it over the brownie and ice cream.

Top with whipped cream, chocolate shavings, and a cherry and you have a Brownie Sundae Affogato.

Looks tasty doesn’t it? You could make this with any of the Gourmesso espresso coffee pods. As you’ll notice on the boxes, they each have a number. This is the intensity of the espresso. Since I like my coffee strong, the more intense the better. I’ve tried intensity levels from 7 to 10 and was really pleased with the flavors.

I’ve gotten in the habit in the mornings of making an iced hazelnut macchiato since it’s hot as heck here in Texas. It takes me about a minute to whip one up. I start with milk, ice and a shot of hazelnut syrup and brew an espresso shot right into the cup. From the aroma of the espresso to watching it mix in with the milk…it’s just a great way to start my day. I have no idea if this is the “proper” way to make a macchiato. All I know is it works for me.

If you’re curious about Gourmesso pods, know that there is a selection of 25 unique blends, the majority of which are Fair-Trade certified. They are also 30% less expensive than Nespresso, making at-home espresso all the more affordable. Since my entire family loves espresso, I’m most likely going to go with one of Gourmesso’s subscription options.

Have you ever had an Affogato? Let me know what your favorite espresso drink is and if you enjoy brewing it at home.
